Following on... Quirks we have come to love...

Mine says "please". He picks up his foot whenever he sees me (done it ever since I taught him to shake) and holds it there until I either force him to move or give him his breakfast/haynet etc! Amusing when you open the stable door in the morning to a horse literally on three legs :p. Also hundreds of other things when ridden and handled including waiting until hes in the field then pissing off with headcollar and leadrope attached, bronking etc will upload photos later got to go and sort him out now :)

My favourite one was when Maiden got stressed, she'd stamp her front feet like a dance from one to the other, nod her head, then reverse a few paces, walk forward and start again! I really miss that :)

ginger boy is one big quirk lol, almost too many to list but my favourite has to be the way he turns to nuzzle your back when you're doing up his girth or picking out his feet, he does it to the farrier as well:o
daughters pony likes to rest his head on top of hers when they're having cuddles:D
Big girl makes me laugh how she pulls faces and really tries to scare people off but if you take no notice she's a big sweetie:p She just loves to try and intimidate people:rolleyes: she once bombed down her field like a angry steam train when she saw someone she didn't know walking across the far end  don't know who it was but they soon hopped back over the fence lol:D

my old tb used to snap at her lead rope when being rugged, she was too polite to snap at a person so the lead rope got a battering instead:)

Fany- does not really have any quirks except her total refusal to lunge!

Captain- he is the quirkiest horse I have ever met. Where to start?

He is a grumpy old git and gets very impatient at teatime God help you if you want to change a rug or anything, he paws impatiently when he thinks he has waited too long, 2 mins max is the waiting time for anything! He will be terrified of the robin in the school, which is the same robin that sits on his withers in his stable. He pulls down his rug rack, throws his head collars around, steals the stable tools and throws them across the barn. When mucking out he waits patiently until you have a full wheel barrow and then turns it upside down for you. He likes to "lead" himself with his lead rein. He unties himself if left too long tied up, throws his bucket out when finished but God help you if you try to take his bucket before he has had the "lickings". He can open his stable door and will do it while you watch and then pull it closed quickly, he just wants you to know he can do it!

He hates parsnips, but instead of just leaving them he gets them out of his bucket and stamps on them, they are the devil to him. We don't wear hats around him any more, he loves to steal them, take them to his water, dip them in then bring them back to you. He steals tins of pop and drinks them.

When in the field one of his favourite tricks when called is to gallop full pelt at you, then skid to a halt. At first it took some nerve to stand there with 17-3hh coming at you, but he has never hit anyone.

When he gets bored, god help you! Boredom is a big issue with him. Once he is bored with lunging he "parks" himself in the same place every time and won't move. During a T.T. demo he was being used for he got fed up, so picked up Elizabeth by her hood and was playing with her. If the farrier is taking too long, in his eyes, then he will undo his apron, steal his hat or take his tools out of his belt one at a time and throw them across the yard. Luckily our farrier knows and likes him a lot!

If he feels neglected, ie you've not given him 100% of your attention in the last 10 seconds, then he will pretend he is opening his stable door pulling the bolt. Or if you walk past he grabs your hoodie and pulls you over.

He is an ex-pro comp horse. Not long after we got him he competed in a SJ class, he did not win (3rd) but he did do a lap of honour! We think that is because of his past.

He is extremely sensitive to cold etc. and refuses to turn out in winter, he will plant if you try to turn him out, he knows difference between that and going in the school because of rugs. When you get him to the field, he waits until you have gone and then removes the gate and brings himself in! This he will do until you get the message. When out in summer, which he likes,if he starts to feel cold he puts his hoof on the top of the metal gate and pulls it down, repeating until someone comes to see to him.

There are loads more as well. Overall he is just too bl**dy intelligent for his own good! Just realised this all makes him sound like a nightmare, actually he is as good as gold, a total gentleman. Just has his "little ways" as our YO puts it! If he was a young horse we would be stricter with him, but he is nearly 18 and had a hard life so I am softer, which is a bit naughty! Elizabeth isn't.

My cob as the most quriks a sense of humour is required with him.
If i bend over and he sees my knickers he grabs them and gives me a wedge. Grabs anything like broom buckets swinging round hence the reason iv been knocked out a few times. Grab so many mobile phones and chucks them in water. When im trying to bath him rips the hose of the tap. My boots have pull tags at the back likes to grab them shaking my leg all over the place. god hes got so many and he twentyone now hes never gonna grow up

Just got back from the yard. Apparently today Cappy has picked up a step ladder and thrown it and stolen YO's OH's welding gloves! Walking round the stable with them I think he said. Never a dull day with my boy.:o:rolleyes::p

Hehe, some brilliant quirks on here. A few of my lot's favourites are:

B: throwing his bucket across the yard/tossing any rugs you put over the door (even momentarily) onto the floor.

N: Deliberately knocking something over and then being TERRIFIED!!!! by it.

R: the crocodile effect when rugging & her all time favourite of throwing everything out of the wheelbarrow the moment it's full!

The baby is currently one big quirk, but the one I love (and isn't at all annoying) is pulling up her top lip and showing off her teeth whenever she eats anything, be it feed, a treat or a zip on a coat.

Oh, another of N's quirks is that she *hates* surgical gloves. Even sedated my vet can't get near her wearing them. Take them off and she'll put up with pretty much anything, with or without sedation.

My boy will not be caught by me unless a polo is given. Others can catch him quite easily. He pulls rugs off of stable doors when left there temporarily and stamp all over them. Mugs the grooming kit box incase polo's are left in there, once ate a whole packet of polo's complete with wrapping. Digs huge wallows but does'nt use them 'til filled with water! Likes to help me poo pick and upend wheelbarrow when full, never half full! Wil pass the biggest tractor with what looks like a fairground ride on the back, one man with a shovel the scariest thing ever, needs to do an about turn in the road! Will have a deer jump out on bridleway practically leaping over his wither, no reaction, black sheep grazing quietly in field adjacent to road will have a hissy fit (spawn of the devil). he will have a white sheep sharing his field, no problem!
You just got to love 'em!

S has one bit of mane which falls the wrong way. Every morning I say hello to her and put her mane on the right side. As soon as I step away from her she shakes her head as if to say "but I LIKED it on that side"
Other than that she's not very quirky - just a saint to ride and fairly independent.

Mine has a few: He takes forever to go to the field. Stops every couple of steps. Same with going in, just keeps stopping all the time!
Swinging his bum when mounting... can get very annoying after a while!

And he has a tendency to leap forward and overtake anything that's going to slow. We've raced a car too... accidentally mind!

Whenever I pay the slightest bit of attention to one of the other horses, Tont always gives me this look as if to say 'I'm your boy, give me the attention' :p

There are certain tracks around our lanes which he really doesn't like going down. This usually leads to an argument in the middle of the road, where I'm trying my hardest to get him to go where I want, and he's trying his hardest not to!

Oh, and he is usually as good as gold to catch, but as soon as it's an emergancy, you can't get near him  Any normal day when I just want to groom him, he's perfect, but when an air ambulance needs to land in the field, that headcollar is terrifying!

Tont is the most peculiar pony you could ever meet, but I love him to bits :p

Where to start with Alvin! A friend has been riding him during the week, I warned her he has his quirks but apparently my warning was insufficient.

Alvin has an irrational fear of rocks, stones, piles of rumble and holes in walls when hacking. To cope with his fear he doesn't plant himself or tank off, no, he has a special move, in which his sticks his head out towards the offending object while is body gets as far away from it as possible in .02 seconds.

Alvin also likes going for adventures while being washed, tie him up, get him half washed, he unties him self then goes cantering off happy as Larry. He's done this 5 times now, not impressive!

He also believes in the mentality that everything is edible until proven other wise - stones, sponges, shavings and gloves included.

He can untie knots and open gates so if I'm taking too long or he's been in "long enough" he lets himself out. This ties in with his amazing houdini thing, not only does he break out, he has also led several mass break outs. And can get out of any where, I've witnessed him loosen then tilt fence posts so he could step over!
