For those of you who have elasticated girths with elastic on only one side, which side do you have the elastic on ?

I have always put the elastic on the mounting (n/s) side and adjusted the tension on that side too. This means that i have to make sure the 'flap' under the elastic doesn't ruck up when i tighten the girth. However, someone else posted that they put the elastic on the other side....which now i think about it would prevent the problem of rucking.

Which way is for you ?

Always have it on the near side

Thats how i always did mine until the other day when someone else asked the same as you, the majority said the off-side. So i tried it that side and TBH it was a lot better. Its also harder to over tighten (im paranoid about this) if its on the off-side.

In fact, thinking about the case of my stud girth....it can ONLY go on the mounting side...but then that girth doesn't have the flap that the Thorowgood girths do

[/ QUOTE ] A lot depends on which side you saddle up from - I saddle up from the near side, girth is already fastened to off side of saddle, so I do the girth up from the near side. For this reason I have the elastic on the off side to avoid over-tightening.

However, once you are on board it is just as easy to tighten the girth from either side!

I always have it on the near side. But I always completly remove my girth when I untack as else it gets a crease from folding it over the saddle.

If we use (usually only on stud girths) elastic is always on the nearside. When I was in France grooming on the riviera tour was severely told off for girthing up with the elastic on the off side- no reason why just an earfull- so is habit really!
Like dieseldog always take girth off and store seperatly from the saddle can't stand it when pple leave attached on off side and fold over the saddle- creases leather and makes saddle filthy dirty- what a grumpy old groom I am!

The elastic should go on the off side, then you would do your final tighten, when on board, from the near side. It's ment to stop you over tightening the girth.
I suppose if you know which hole the girth goes on on both sides (big lad is on 7 at both sides), it doesn't really matter though.

I was told by my saddler many moons ago to alternate the side if girth only has elastic one side, so thats what I do nearside one week and off side the next.
