Food Aggression

Our 6yr old Welsh Sec D gelding has always shown a little aggression when he was being fed in his stable. Throwing himself around and crowding etc.

We are now feeding him in his paddock (there is a reason for this) and obviously he is exhibiting the same behaviour. The immediate entrance to his paddock is deep in mud so I always walk 5 yards onto good grass and empty his feed there. Yesterday he threw his neck at me to the point when I was convinced he would make contact . I instinctively lashed out at him in self defence . He responded by double barreling me . The first time he literally just brushed me the second time missed by a mile. I emptied the feed and left the field. When I went to collect him later without food to bring him into the stables he was fine.

I have looked at numerous articles on this on the net and most suggest squaring up to him and making him understand I will give him the food when I am good and ready. Some suggest flicking the leadrope at his chest ( ha ha) and other means - blue pipe etc. This pony is my daughters pony and I am not sure I want her to be in that position to be honest . He IS NOT the sort of pony to shy away from a scrap!

Any ideas how we can tackle this ? Thanks
