Hey guys, excuse my noobiness but I have a question with regards to food in livery yards. Is it generally included in the price? Do you supply and they just feed? Would you have your own food bins (so to speak) just for your horses? It seems like a silly question but if you don't ask you won't know eh?

I assume also that the yard provides the hay? Can't imagine having to lug that back and forth? Seems a lot of storage would be required if everyone was supplyin their own hay.

DIY- hard feed won't be included
Hay rarely included in the price, often the YO will buy it in and you buy it off them. However recently that is not always the case and some yards will give you enough space to buy a small amount of bulk quantity.

Part livery - hard feed sometimes included
Hay is usually included in price

It depends on the type of livery. Full livery and everything is provided, DIY and you will have to buy your own feed, supplements, bedding, hay/haylage and keep if in the storage area allocated to you. There may be an option to buy on site or share large bales of haylage etc. and never be afraid to ask the question! :-)

Completely depends on the type of livery/yard

Part/full would usually include hay. DIY might, may specify you buy off yard, or you might need to arrange your own.

Hard feed similar. Often on part/full you will find you are offered a set menu to choose from and if you want something different then you buy it in

Everything I've read so far suggests you need to find 'the' feed that suits your horses nutritional needs, so I didn't think the yard would provide feed for you? Or are a lot of feeds suitable for the majority of horses?

We supply feed to a livery yard which has mainly dressage horses, the basics that they have every week are cool mix, Alfa Oil, horse and pony cubes and Tiger Oats. We also supply an eventing yard and the feed is very similar with the addition of sugar beet, so I think you can safely assume that all the horses have a varying amount of these feeds with the diet tweaked to include various supplements, and of course for work done.

Every livery yard I've been at has supplied food and hay on part and full packages. You're welcome to feed your own feed though, I did as I found the provided stuff was very basic.

I feed what my liveries ask me to feed their horses. They tell me how much for each feed and I go from there. If, for example, the horse isn't eating all of it, I would let the owners know and they are happy for me to adjust accordingly rather than waste feed. They do their horses most weekends, so if feed is low they tend to buy new in. If I notice that it is low (sometimes they forget!), then I buy it for them and add the price onto their next bill. I don't charge any extra for this.
I provide our own hay and will buy in several bales of haylage from my supplier. Liveries write down what they use as they use it and I add it to next bill. This way liveries just have a bale open each at any one time. They can buy in their own if they wish, but space would be limited for this.

Most of the time full livery includes hard feed, but the last 2 yards I've been on its not been included, which suits me far better as I can feed what I want / make changes.
