After sat reading this post I realised that there are a couple issues that need to be address by breeders of all descriptions. What and who are you are breeding for? If you as a breeder want to breed for yourself, great, the only person you have to impress is yourself. If however you are breeding for the masses then you must decided what area of the market you are aiming for top middle or bottom. In many ways the bottom end of the market is considerable easier to satisfy. You dont have to use expensive stallions, and you can produce the foal at a reduced cost. If you are producing for the top end of the market then you are going to have to start with an outstanding mare and use a popular and generally expensive stallion. The end result namely the foal may be a disappoint and very expensive to produce. If we are ever to compete with the like of germans and dutch we have to look at how they do it. Good mares using the stallion that best suits that mare and selling the foal in the showcase auctions that you find on the continent. It is not considered to be a negative thing to sell your foal at an auction unlike here. Most people on the continent uses these auctions as a showcase for their studs. There several really good stud here that offer excellent service help and advice to the small time breeders and they want to help promote British breeding. Its about time breeders here starting singing from the same hymn sheet. We after all started and run one of the biggest studbooks in the world. Infact many countries have modelled theirs own on ours. But while the non TB family bitch and crow then we will continue to trail behind Europe and even the USA
