Well as its reasonably local to us, we have taken the decision not to take my nieces to Royal Leisure today and are just waiting to hear further news during the week. We just felt it a bit irresponsible to take horses to somewhere where there could possibly be people coming from the Guildford area, as our livery yard is in the middle of farming country, particularly just for our pleasure.
Its people livelihoods that are at stake after all.
According to people who have rung the DEFRA help line on IHDG, DEFRA are saying the national ban on movement DOES include horses, even though this is contradicted on their website. (NIce to know DEFRA are up to standard then as usual!)
On the website it says it doesn't include horses outside the zone, but when people from IHDG rang DEFRA, they said the national ban includes horses - so as usual DEFRA are being as clear as mud!
Defra website has been updated and now states that although horses are not affected by the national movement ban, there are restrictions..........Namely, Horses can only be moved in or out of the 3km protection zone under licence. Horses can not be moved from premises to premised within the 3km protection zone, when there are susceptible animals on the same premises, except under licence, and vehicles designed for the transport of animals, including horse boxes, where susceptible animals are kept, con not be moved from premises within the 3km protection zone except under licence.
It doesnt include horses, well I hope not as we have our county show on tomorrow and Monday and all the horses are still going ahead (obviously cattle etc. not).
It didnt include horses last time so why should it this time?
I will be keeping my horses put for now anyway and stay well away from places where cattle are kept. It would be very upsetting if the cattle nearby had to be put down and we might have contributed to spreading it.
My thoughts go out to all the farmers out there, it must be such a desperate situation :-(
I phoned DEFRA about an hour ago and was told no restriction on movements for horses unless in the restricted zone - I did double check this to be absolutely sure and was assured that horses could be ridden/driven or transported anywhere in the country apart from the restricted zone.
Our driving club meet has been cancelled as its was to be through forest where deer graze but I believe shows are carrying on unless the individual landowners have asked for cancellation

I seem to remember a lot of shows and events cancelled last time, and when they resumed having to disinfect our vehicles and have the wheels disinfected arriving and leaving the showgrounds. It certainly didnt stop us hacking out although I did avoid the fields around here that had livestock in.
wasnt badminton cancelled last time? not holding out much hope for burghley and if they are going to cancel anything the dressage nationals will be as its held at stoneleigh and its a national agricultural centre
