HELP! Horse shod 2 weeks ago pulled one front shoe off and twisted other, which we took off ,within 5 days.Farrier came back on Monday[ 4 days later] and put them back on. Went to box him in afternoon to go for lesson and he was lame. Farrier came back and said one nail was causing problem so removed nail, horse still lame. Told to wait a few days and see how it goes. He was still lame today and farrier at Hickstead so phoned vet. Shoe removed found black mark and weeping so poulticing. No anti biotics or painkillers.

QUESTION; I have used animalintex and sacking but would anyone recommend any boots to put poultice in. I went to saddler who had equiboot[ but not his size ] and another larger boot that used velco and a strap ,which looked nice but was £50 and said it shouldn't be left on for 24 hours due to risk of bacteria forming.Any help advice.THANKS

Ive always used bread bags over the top of the poultice then duck taped to old secure-never lost one yet and so cheap!

Forget boots and get yourself some disposable nappies and duct tape

Someone introduced me to this method of poulticing a few years ago and I have never looked back. I even turnout like this. The nappy fits beautifully to the shape of the horses foot, with a vet wrap over the top and then copious amounts of Duct tape, it works a treat. I use an animalintex for first 24 hrs with the above and then just the nappy etc

I always use animalintex, bit of gamgee over the top and then vet wrap over that - then I put the foot end of an old pair of thick tights over the top to keep it all in place. (assuming you keep your horse in!) I found duct tape ripped, but that might have been because I didn't put enough on? I will try the nappy idea next time though, as it sounds like a good one.

When I poulticed my boys foot I vetwrapped the animalintex onto his hoof, then put the nappy on securing with duct tape at the top and a human sock over the top again secured with duct tape at the top (the sock stopped the nappy falling apart when he tramped about his stable).

briliant that you found pus

, i'm a great nappy/duct tape user for pus in foot. As after you finish with animalinax, nappy with still draw if any puss still in foot plus it's great for padding sole
Now you've found route of pain should be sound very quick and i hope you be fit to compete on your big weekend
