An old 25 year old pony of mine's feet started cracking up in April and i've been battling ever since.
Anyhow, she went chronically lame the day before yesterday so i called the farrier. She's lame on the most badly cracked one hind hoof. It has only been 4 1/2 weeks since last trim.
I've given her 1/2 a bute yesterday and today and stood her in daytime and popped back out overnight.
Farrier really cut it right back which was quite painful for her and told me to put iodine on to kill all bacteria.
He also told me she'd be better off out as she can move around.
I feed her biotin daily and have done for some time. She's a pretty good doer so lives on grass mostly and is only used as a tiny tots lead rein at weekends.
Any tips on how to deal with foot rot, as farrier says it is this and i want to manage her correctly........

Scrub clean with hibiscrub in hot water leave to dry and keep spraying with iodine, this will kill any bacteria and the hoof will soon improve.

Follow your farriers advice, it is good advice. It will take time. You may want to add a vit/min supplement to the diet too, unless you are feeding full rations of a complete food.

I give her a very small handful of good doer and about six pony nuts and then add biotin!! She really is a good doer.....
Farrier did say to carry on with bute for the next fes days and if no better then he'll pop a shoe on it, but he couldn't do it today cos it was just too sore for her!

Good advice has already been given to get rid of it.

I find using a tea tree spray in the foot keeps it away pretty much after you have cleared it up.

It's really difficult this time of year to keep hoof hygiene A1 as they are stood in mud all the time. If you can get some tea tree in after picking out it gives a fighting chance as it's antibacterial without being harsh.

I'd use Cleantrax to ensure everything has been killed off inside the foot to begin with.

Does she have any signs of Cushings at all?

I'd use an Engemycin spray from the Vets to clear it up quickly. Day to day keep feet as clean and dry as possible and scrub with a weak solution of hibiscrub and a hard brush, leave to dry and then apply spray.

Vet came today and has told me to up bute to one a day instead of half. He thinks she is showing signs of cushings but it is indeed a tricky situation. The pony is only on loan to me as a companion, so really don't want to be spending loads on her. The vet agrees that we treat feet first (he'll come back in one week). It will take months to get feet right and we have to get that sorted first before we start investigating further!!
