I'm new to this forum, but as I'm in need of advice so thought i would use this site! I have had my Trakehner gelding for about 8 years with no serious problems (Touch Wood!) up until now. He as shoes around and has done for forever, he also has poor quality feet, but I have managed to maintain it through supplements/Lotions and potions. But in the past few months he has been very foot sore for a few days after the farrier, i have asked if the farrier if he is doing anything different and he says he has done nothing different. i had the vet look at him about 6 months ago and she said he is fine and walks fine for a 14 year old. he has had a very tough competitive life with me but nothing points towards his joints/legs ect. he lives in in the winter and stays out in the summer but comes in in the day and has moved yards. Im not sure if these are factors or not??

Im just at a loss as hes not LAME LAME, just Footy (if that makes sense)
Do i call the vet or rest him for a while?

All comments welcome!

Thank you

If it's been after the farrier shod him I would call the farrier back out, maybe he's just touched the White line or a abcess brewing? Has he any pulses at all?

I had a different farrier have a look as he was visiting the yard and he couldn't see a problem nor a pulse, which fills me with dread that its not foot and I hope its not a leg problem. Sob!

Actually after Reading it again I take it, it's been going on for a few shoeings now.
It's hard to say without seeing the horse but I have a horse who was pottery ( not lame) everytime after shoeing so had lameness workup and nerve blocks done before x rays to find his problem. Maybe call the vet out the day after he's shod next so they see him at his worst? That's what I had to do as I had to cancell the vet twice as he came right again so had to time it with the shoeing. He's now barefoot and although still sore at times nothing like he use to be.

If it's stright after shoeing I would say foot, is it 1 or all? My lad was pottery all round and nobody cause see it apart from me as I knew him so well

my 21 year old TB x shire is the same. She has always been a bit footy for 24 hours after so I usually don't ride her. She has definitely been feeling the stones more recently and last time she was shod she was sore for a few days. My old farrier used to do her front feet one at a time so she didn't have to stand on the other one with no shoe on. She is due to be done on Thursday and that is what I am going to ask the farrier to do. I was also thinking of giving her a bute the day she is shod so she is not uncomfortable. Not having shoes is not an option as her feet aren't great. If you find anything that works let me know!

Thatsmygirl what was wrong with him?

Have you had his back etc looked at? My farrier was telling me he used to do one that struggled for a few days after shoeing and it turned out to have an injury to its shoulder that being held up for a long time while shod was aggravating for a few days.

Its straight after shoeing, he potters about, but trots up sound, just circles are tough. I have his back checked, he has physo and a back pad, the Vet looked at him and she says hes fine, but that's not directly after shoeing. maybe that's worth a try!

Would the type of shoe affect him?

Thanks for all your comments:)

Be there when horse next shod. Check unshod hoof before shoe goes back on and make sure you can identify where each nail has been. If through the white line or even inside you need to talk to your farrier.
