Hi,
My mare went to stud last June and came back with a poisend foot. She kept jumping out of fields and they think she must have landed on a stone or something. She was a bit lame but not too bad it was poulticed etc and cleared up. Then as she started getting heavier with th foal (she was huge) the foot kept splitting (I'm guessing because it was weak) she was not at all lame on it. the past 2 months the foot is holding together and looking good. But the past couple of days she has been lame again. Blacksmith came out on Monday to trim and said call the vet if she is still lame in a few of days. We trotted her up out in the field (this sounds silly but the foal was out with her and we thought if she was lame on soft ground shes going to be lame on hard ground) she was nodding lame. This horse is 16 years old we have had since she was 5 and the only other time she was lame was when she was at a very expensive scottish livery yard atht also has a hotel and got kicked when she was out in the field. She was supposed to be in all weekend.Other than these two time she has never been sick or sorry so I am a bit worried. There is no heat in foot and could not feel a pulse. ( i heard a minging story from blacksmith a while ago where a horse was lame in the foot and they couldnt figure it out then blacksmith went to put a shoe on and the foot crumbled off and was full of maggots, it had to be pts)The vet is coming this afternoon but just wondered how worried I should be.
Give yourself a pat on the back if you managed to read all of this

From a very worried Grandma

It is more than likely then something rumbling away in the foot. Maybe something has worked its way up a split and causing problems. Vet will soon put you right :)

Thankyou! I hope so. its just been going on so long and because she is not in work shes just mummy-ing some days she doesnt look to bad other days she looks really sore. Im hoping it won't be something un treatable because she isnt the sort of horse that would take kindly to retirement. shes fine now shes got her foal as that keeps her occupied but even when shes in full work she just keeps jumping from field to field (never escaped as yet but this worries me) She jumps 1.30 electric fencing at a trot!! even if its into a starvation paddock just for poopsies and ha ha's. The stud couldnt believe it when the saw her in a different field every time the looked and used to sit and watch her do it ( she wasnt doing any harm, she isnt a bully she just likes a change of scene I think):o

Vet has been, can see a cavity and a bruise and she is obviously lame but the foot is clean. He has poulticed it and told us to change it on saturday and re poultice and he will have another look on monday. He rekons if we leave it that long something will hopefully come out as it must be very deep. But he thinks its all a bit strange. she didnt react to hoof testers at all anywhere. but he does love the foal (proud grandma).

she could have gravel which has gone upwards instead of downwards and out. It usually breaks out eventually through the coronet band (not as horrendous as it sounds) or it could be deep bruising or any number of things really.
Is there any way you can keep her shod on the front? Will help stop and bruising and gravel...

We were advised by blacksmith to keep her barefoot because the hole is where a show would cover and it was to help it grow out but its just been sooo long and vet seemed a bit bewildered about the whole thing. Hopefully we will see something in the poultice on sat so we know a little more what we are dealing with. there no heat, pulse and she isnt reacting to hoof testers just lame.Thankyou for you help!

You should do a fresh poultice every day ideally for 3 days, then dry poultice for 2 days. I suspect however that you will end up needing to x-ray to find out what's really going on.
