Pony has been barefoot for ten months and has taken to it brilliantly not a day sore since the fronts came off. Anyway daughter did a 15 mile ride at the weekend and now he seems footsore. Had a good look at him today and he seems to be very tentative and a bit trippy on the gravel path, seems ok in the school. Farrier is out tomorrow for routine check but I was told that he will probably put front shoes on him as he hasn't much foot ( this was by someone today when checking him over). My farrier is very barefoot friendly and it was on his suggestion that we went barefoot last year and now I'm worried that I'm going to have to put shoes on him again, as he can be very difficult when it comes to shoeing and it's been such a relief not to have the worry when it comes to farrier time again. There's no heat or digital pulse that I can feel and so I'm just wondering if it was all to much doing the sponsored ride. He only has half a scoo of hi if lite twice a day, his out at night and he has hay when his in, I thought we were doing so well :(

How far do you normally hack? Maybe the step up to 15 miles was too much, you do have to increase distances slowly with BF horses IME. Also what was the terrain like?

Don't forget that BF hooves look shorter than shod ones, so I wouldn't worry about the 'not much hoof' comment.

Hi fi light has molasses in, so I would swap to hi fi molasses free. Do you feed vits and mins that are balanced to the normal deficiencies in UK grazing (eg Pro Hoof, Pro Balance or Farage plus) plus salt?

If you are going to do long rides every nown and again, but he's coping fine normally, I would look into hoof boots for those long rides.

Thanks for replies, normal distance I'm not exactly sure although daughter has been increasing his hacking time over the summer ready for the ride. It was the Newmarket ride and i thought the ground was nice and soft as I was worried about this before they went. I Feed dengie vita and mins, the powdered one so maybe I should switch to the pro hoof/ balance. I did realise hi if lite has molasses but thought that at the amount he was getting it would be very minimal but I can switch to molasses free if that would make a difference. Yes his hooves do look short but then they always have since the shoes were taken off so I haven't seen a major difference with them. I will see what the farrier says tomorrow, hopefully with a bit of rest he will be back to normal as it would be a shame to go back to shoes after he has done so well.
