Footy after mustang rolls - soft soles?

After last trim especially but signs before Oliver has gone very footy. I did take him for a walk in-hand the weekend before and although I tried to keep him on the soft ground I’m wondering if he bruised his soles. Feet are not hot. He’s fine in the field but very sensitive on any hard especially uneven surface.

Obviously the ground is very wet and I expect his soles are quite soft. I’m wondering if something like hoof clay would protect his soles a bit more? Any other suggestions appreciated.

Maybe check if your trim has taken the hoof wall down to sole level all the way round the hoof. The back third of the hoof from heel to approximately half way down the frog should be left a little proud, like a collar to support the frog. Otherwise he will be bearing weight on the frog, instead of spreading weight across the wall and heel buttress. The wet weather doesn't help either - maybe consider hoof boots for a bit?

He’s got hoof boots which I should have used but thought a short walk would be ok. He’s tender walking to and from field and he can’t wear them all day as they’ll be sodden and will rub. Was just hoping to help him until it dries up. Will check the trim regarding the heels.

Yes my question was going to be what else got trimmed, f would get footy if anyone touched his bars for instance.

As to whether it is then a sole pressure issue and putting something on them would help, or not

Soft soles + wet ground + a fresh trim = tender. No heat, fine in field, sore on hard/uneven - sounds exactly like bruising or just thin soles.

Hoof clay can help, yes. Putty/texture stuff, acts like a cushion and stops direct stone pressure. Worth a go. Some use sole pads or temporary boots for walks.

Keep him moving on soft when you can. Hard ground will feel like concrete to him right now.

The farrier really only rounded off the hoof wall and didn’t remove any foot. He doesn’t seem to grow any significant hoof or it wears quickly. Heels and bars were definitely not trimmed.

Thanks I won’t be doing anything outside the arena without boots on now. Is there any kind of hoof clay you can recommend?
