For a friend - How much? Project horse...

My friend has asked me to post about her horse on here (she isn't a member of the forum).

She has a 14.3hh rising 4yo mare (should make 15hh). Good bone, ideal LW/MW cob. Tri coloured, done a lot of natural horsemanship stuff, great with the farrier, vet, loading, travelling etc. Turned out with mares and gelding all shapes and sizes. I think she was lightly backed (sat on a couple of times) as a 3yo then turned away. She has a great temprement - really just needs backing and giving an education - not really a 'project' in the terms of being naughty - she is very gentle and kind. She does have a price in mind but would like another opinion. My friend has had her since a yearling, and knows her full history. A couple of pics from when she was younger;

maybe around £500-£800? I'm not very good at these but as I spend so much of my studying time on horsemart, I usually see these kind of horses for under £1000
 
Hmmm interesting, I will relay to her. I know she is thinking of a lot more than that. It's funny, this is a lovely mare, well handled, uncomplicated etc and doesn't seem to be worth much at all. I know where you are all coming from though - nothing is really selling at the moment, I guess it must be cheap to sell.
 
TBH it could be it does not really matter what the economic situation is at the moment, although she looks like a lovely sweet mare....unbroken/slightly backed coloured cob types do not ever seem to go for much money unless they have good breeding/maybe some in-hand show experience/very safe etc. May be just me but this is my opinion...please don't slate me!

Id have thought 800-1000. I would be happy at 800. She is a good size, ready to break and well handled. She would sell her all day long at 300, that seems too cheap compared to other ads.
 
In the nicest possible way, she's not really a very attractive horse (and I have nothing against coloured cobs)
I think £800 max
 
I am not offended (she isn't my horse lol) and I know the owner is looking for a good home rather than to make bundles of cash. I agree the pictures aren't particularly flattering, and taken a couple of years ago, which doesn't help, lol. I will print off this and show her. Thanks.
 
The problem is that unbroken she is only likely to attract dealers. At £300 i think shes too cheap. Many horses that have had little handling go for £600 but some go for £100!

I would say around £800- £1000 but if she were backed you could double it easily. To secure a better future for the horse your friend would be better off backing her and riding her on for a few months. Agree with themule though, shes not amazingly strking.
 
Agree with the comments above.
If she has no particular breeding and not a very flashy confirmation she may not appeal that much to people who wish to show.
People who want happy hackers /general rc horses may prefer to buy something that has already been backed and going well, and that is safe in traffic, good to hack out & at shows etc. At that point you would also see if she had talent for jumping etc. But I think she would need to be ridden quite a lot and not just slightly backed to appeal to that market segment - so it may be that your friend is better of selling now at 800ish than, say, keep/back/work her for 1 more year?
