well guys i've been lurking around for a while now, but this is my first post.
after my last horse died(he was bought from holmfirth) i've been horseless, generally due to no time/money,im now in a better position to have one again.

i have been offered a welsh D he is 14.2hh,im only 5'3 but i have got a lot of stick for wanting a PONY,my old lad was 16.3 he was generally to strong for me and tacking up was a nightmare as was trying to lead him if he spooked.

so really what are your opinions on adult pony riders? and does any one have any pics the can share?
thanks guys to anyone who answers

My friend has a 26 year old NF X Arab, who I think is about 13.3hh/14hh. My friend is about 5ft 2. She's owned her since she was about 6 I think, and they've had a very successful partnership, taking part in XC, endurance, hunting etc.

If you like this pony, and can afford to take him on, I would get him vetted and ignore all these others. Sometimes you have to trust your own instinct, and if it feels right go for it!

Good luck x

i have a 14.2 arab mare i used to ride im 5ft 7
had no problem i used to jump do endurance with her and some of my other horses were only 15-15.2

as u say at least u wont be over horsed

i would have a go

best of luck

I'm a small or you could say short adult and I ride and own a lovely mare and she's only 13.2hh. As long as you don't look outta place on them I wouldn't worry. I love her as if she was 15.2hh

You would be fine on him. I used to work for a show pony producer who is in her 30's, 5'3 and shows section a's, amongst others. She just had some very big wins at HOYS on section as and bs.

Go for it I say! My mum has a Fjord and they have a fantastic time together! Here they are:

And me jumping him!

Everything is easier with a pony, less poo, eat less etc. etc

Go for it! My current horse (15.1hh Irish Draught x T.b) has become unlevel behind and so I have taken over the ride on my daughter's 13.2hh N/FX. as she is now out of 13.2 classes.
My previous horse was 17.1hh Irish T.B - I enjoy the 13.2 more than either of the 2 horses!
I plan to hunt my pony and may even consider competing on him!
I also have a Welsh sec. C mare who is going to be professionally produced next month and my daughter and I will be fighting over who will ride her - my daughter is about 5'8 and I am 5'6 so we are not little dwarf people. You will find that cobs take your leg up so you shouldn't look big on a D.
Get the pony and have fun - they are so much cleverer than horses!

I had a 13.2 until he died when I was 35, I then had a 16.2 until he died and I now have a 14.2 pony. Not to take anything away from my horse, as he was much loved and taught me loads, it's ponies all the way for me.
I just feel so much more comfortable compared to when I'm on a horse, I'm 5'5".
If you want a pony, go for it and don't listen to what anybody else says. We spend a lot of money on our nags, you owe it to yourself to get something that is going to make you happy!!

Definately go for it!!!
Melly is 14.2hh (aparrantly!) and Im 5'9" and quite a heavy lady! Were fine! Tell anyone who says anything to plop off!!!x

I'm 5'6/5'7 and i own a 13.3hh new forest. I am light but i dont look too tall on her. I really enjoy riding her, and will compete her in spring against horses.

I get good natured stick about my pony at the yard, but i really dont care, she shows up the horses when it comes down to it! Its worth it!

My Genie is Welsh D and 14.3hh ish (she was advertised at 14.2hh), and I'm 5'3 ish. We have a fantastic time, and people who have ridden her have commented that she rides like a horse! Ignore the people who are giving you stick for wanting a 'pony'!

Me and my beautiful Welsh D (beautiful in my opinon anyway!)

hi and welcome

well i have had the same mare since i was 11yrs old, thats over 16yrs!
she is a 14.2hh cob type, i am 5"5 &1/2, my mare has always managed me perfectly fine, i am not interested in horses, they are lovely but i love my small horse/pony, & would not change her height at all, and if people have a problem they can pee off! i am not too big for her, i have never been told so, but i have heard and seen it happen to others

there seems to be some degree of snobbery i find, but i dont give a monkeys, i can mount and dismount with real ease, i can do gates easily, i can tuck myself right out of the way of cars more easily, fit under things, the benefits for me are endless, and for many others i am sure

when i have to retire my mare i shall be buying something as close a build, shape and size as she is, she is perfect

Welsh Cobs RULE!!!

I'm 5'5 and have a 15hh welsh cob, my old instructor was a good lanky 6ft and even he looked fine. If its a typey cob with a barrel instead of a back they can take up so much leg its unreal!

thanks alot guys you've really put my mind to rest, i have ridden him and felt fine on him.just the comments i got made me doubt my judgement a bit. thanks

A welsh D is techically a COB not a pony, so tell them that! They are fab animals and I would totally ignore anyone who says you shouldn't have one

Welcome to HHO

Hi, welcome. I am 5'1 & the proud owner of 2 ponies, Meg is 13hh & 18 now, we still jump a bit for fun & compete up to elementary level dressage, we have ode, sj drag hunted & everything in between. Kizzy is 14hh & we are going to have a go at some BSJA next year, will have to register as a grade c horse!!, we also event at riding club level, have drag hunted & also dressage to elementary level. Yes, I agree there is snobbery, just ignore them & get on & enjoy your pony.

i have 2 Welsh D's. one 15.1hh built like brick out-house and one 15.2hh with big withers built like a TB - i look quite different on them but fine on both. i'm 5ft7.

I have 2 Welsh D's. They're both around the 14.2hh mark. I'm 5ft 7" and a no lightweight adult.

My 3yr old filly has recently been backed and is doing well:

And I Event and do RC comps with my 15yr old:

I got some stick from Riding Club people in the early years with Rosie, but it seems much more acceptable in other peoples' eyes for adults to ride and compete ponies these days.

I've done British Eventing for 4 seasons now and haven't had one person there make derogatory comments about me being on a pony.

Anyone that does have a go at you - tell them to stuff it !!!!

I'm 5'4 and my 4 yr old Welsh D mare is 13.3/14hh. We get along fine, I don't look too big on her at all, if anything I look quite small as she is so wide my legs are going at right angles round her, rather than dangling!!!
Her full brother who is 3 yrs old and no where near as wide is around 14.3hh and has been ridden by a friend who is 5'9, and they fitted together perfectly.
Don't worry about other people it's your choice. Many of my friends used to take the p*** about having a pony (after years of taking a friends 17.2 ID hunting) but when they saw me ride they stopped and saw how perfectly fitted we are.

Im 25 and have a Welsh D. I also have what I call my "serious" horse who is a 16hh TB x Luso. But I always wanted a Welsh D as my "fun" horse which he is. Im about 5'6/5'7 I think and I ride a 15.2hh one. TBH, he feels way MORE of a horse than my bigger TB one! We do mainly M&M showing / WHP but also BE & an odd bit of BSJA.

Please dont assume a pony is any less of a hasstle than a horse though! Welsh D's are renowned for being quite stroppy and strong minded! Although mine cant really be classed as a pony as such since he is a 15.2hh....

This is my boy:

Im 5ft 4, and i ride a 14hh connemara.

With native breeds there is no age limit on showing classes so your fine there and they can do dressage with the best of them.
the only thing is that you might struggle a little bit with the distances in showjumping as it is all strided for horses but my pony just sorts himself out anyway (when he decides he is actualy going to jump) they are so much more nimble and sure footed then horses.

this is my lad

Oww - I've only just seen this and had to comment. I am 5'5" and 33 yrs old, and my beautiful boy is a 14.3 section D. Sometimes I feel a bit odd at shows and stuff as the classes I enter are always full of strapping horses. My husband did once comment that we looked like Danny Devitto at the end of a line up in a riding club horse class (horse (!) lol - but we are over 14.2) but we soon shut him up when we won - as my boy went sooo well. We also do a bit of dressage and it doesn't seem to matter as much then. I lurrrrrrrrrve my boy and wouldn't swap him for the world even if he is the cheekiest little monkey who could outwit a horse (or human for that matter) in his sleep.
