I run a small, friendly, diy livery yard. My clients, both human and equine are all looked after well, with any jobs/repairs done immediately, all year roung grazing , and on site help as and when required. If I had to be on a livery yard, I would certainly choose mine!

To those of you who moan about your YO's, today I had to endure from my clients:
- dropppings left in the middle of the yard, as the said owner was too keen to rush off for her evening out and 'forgot' to clean up after her horse...
- 2 over fed, underexcercised horses deciding to charge around their paddocks so spent 40 mins treading in their skid marks, when should have been excercising own horse....
- lights left on in the barn even though client was mucking out in a separate stable block, also with all lights on - not just in her own stable....
- another client forgetting to put her handbrake on her car, which then ploughed through a 5 bar gate and hitting my veichle, taking off the front bumper and smashing my number plate to pieces......

All in one day!

So when you decide to have a go at your long suffering YO, for being a misearble git ..........!!

(love you all really xx)

Hope you dont get another day like that!!
I have always hated livery yards but we were forced to use one after the owner of the other yard decided to sell and we had to move. Its a new yard and so far very nice and friendly. She even found a store cupbourd for us and put our rugs and things in, if theres a problem you can tell her and she deals with it, its great after some of the blinking awful yards weve been on in the past.

I shouldn't really moan - all my clients are lovely with nice natured horses. The yard is not bitchy and we all help each other out, but today was just 'one of those days'.
Hope I still have a business tomorrow....!!

Ah, "those days" do seem to happen quite regularly around horses... I hope tomorrow's much better for you!

The riding school where I work also offers livery, and when I read some of the horror stories you come across on here I think our liveries must thank their lucky stars! The only imposition upon them is that, as the business is first and foremost a riding school, the school is in use pretty much every daylight hour in the weekend. Obviously this wouldn't suit a lot of people, but our liveries are fine with it and apart from that I think our service is pretty damn good.

This definitely something I would do!

Although I have always noticed and caught the car so haven't destroyed anything yet...

Actually all of the points the OP made sounds like daft things I would do. Must try harder!

Luckily my YO is lovely and tbh is also quite forgetful so we get along great hehe x

Do you know what would happen on my old yard......? Yep everyone would be moaned at APART from the people who did it !!!

I always have sympathy for yard owners - take our yard this week

Sunday - someone blocks in a horse box as they have taken their horsebox out for the day and leave their car parked behind the other horse box - no apology or consideration - but wo betide anyone who parks within a 100 meters of them when they want to go out.

The morning staff shouted at because they should have left a couple of horses in to be shod..... no note in the diary - crystal ball on the blink !

When the muck heap has been pushed pack by the staff - someone empties their wheelbarrow right at the very start of the muck heap bay.... and yep you guessed it everyone else followed - may as well have left muck heap where it was so they can just empty the muck outside the stables!

The one that really gets me - is the fight over the weeks diary on a Friday - the y'o will only put a week out at a time for this very reason - every conceivable slot is booked from 7am until 9am and from 4pm till 8pm FOR THE WHOLE WEEK - then every night 80% of the folks cancel - last night between 5 and 7 only 1 person rode for an half an hour!!!! I wanted to ride, so did a few of my friends but we had not taken our tack becuase the school was not free till 7.30 - so the yo will have me moaning today and loads of others.

Glad i dont run a yard !

So you know that loads of the time people cancel, you want to ride and you don't take your tack up because the slots are booked, and now you are going to moan at YO - TBH I think you could probably help yourself just a little bit more in this situation, don't you, poor YO

The yard I used to be on had a booking system but 90% of the time people would share, and I'm afraid I just used to get on and get in the school if someone had booked it but was nowhere to be seen. In 4 years no-one ever chucked me out.....

Yep you are right i should have taken my tack and yep poor old yo should be spared the ear ache......but if you cancel within 24 hours you are supposed to pay yo a cancellation charge - but when the names are obliterated it is rather difficult to charge - PLUS its the "fantastic clique" that keeps doing it - and it is my sad pathetic way of getting my own back (lol) !

I'm a yard owner and today I was having a lie in till 8 o'clock knowing I only had my 4 horses to muck out instead of my usual 8. ( I still turn out all 16 but at least only 4 to muck out today) Then I got a text at 7.30 asking me to muck out another 3 horses as the owner was going christmas shopping. Great - thanks for the notice and thanks for the early call!!

I also hate the livery who forgets to tell me her trainer is coming up to school her horse. I turn it out as normal - carry on mucking out all the horses - but haven't got to hers when the trainer turns up and complains it is out and can I get it in and rants at me. UM NO!!!! I am not there to work for trainers get it your self. Then he proceeds to chuck it in it's stable ( not mucked out yet) where the horse throws itself around the box in a paddy because it wants to be out, destroys its feed bucket and absolutely trashes its bed then I have to put in loads of new bedding. Think - I am not telepathic I have no idea you want it left in unless you tell me!!

I love my liveries and do everything I can for them but a little bit of thought and notice does make my life a bit easier.

Surely this is not th YO's fault. If you are going to moan at anyone moan at the people who book the school and then don't turn up.

Thank you for your support for YO's, as we do get a lot of grief on this forum, (though appreciate in some circumstances it is well deserved.)
Interesting to note said 'bumper basher' has of yet not offered to repair the damage. I will wait until the end of the weekend to see if an offer comes forward, but if not......!!!

aw poor you! i love my YO!

i do think YOs have to put up with so much crap off people- i personally couldn't do it- nor would i want to

As a part time groom on a livery yard where I keep my horse I get to see both sides of it. I think everyone who keeps there horse on livery should be made to work a week before keeping there horse on livery, it really opens your eyes, little things can make such a difference

My YO is ace!

I've found out recently she feels sorry for FC and has been throwing haylage at her (free of charge!). Anything we need, she gets in for us!

My mum and sister's YO has the patience of a saint!!!!

RE school - change it so that you can pre book, but have a rule stating if the person booked is not on the yard by about five minutes before their booking, another rider may take it. If school is empty 10 minutes after a booking, rider may take it.
They should stop doing it then!

in the last 2 years, 2 of my liveries have left their handbrakes off and damaged their cars - its never wise to let your car roll into very large rock gatepost or buildings!

Most of my liveries are fab all of the time, but yep, we have poops left in the indoor left by Mr Nobody (though a word to my main suspect that if it continued would result in no turnout in the indoor seems to have fixed it!), lights being left on etc. My new pet hate at the moment is one of the field gates being left WIDE open at night when the last one comes in - wonder how long it would take them to moan if they try and turn out one morning but the gate is broken.....
