so now my DR deason is under way and i dont want to be seen on a filth machine how can i get the stains off him?? the dark patches on his tummy and rump are wee and poo stains and he has been bathed numerous times and i still cant get the yellow off him... surely too many baths are bad for his coat and skin? i currently use quicksilver shampoo but that isnt making a bit of difference. He is currently stabled with a summer sheet on but the mess seems to soak through, he sweats up very easily so cant put a light weight stable rug on either! catch 22 ??!!

i had a grey who was "whiter" than your man. Washing up liquid was really good. also my mare has white socks, she had a cut on them so i cleaned it with diluted hibi scrub, that really whitened her sock up, hope that helps.

Try human Tresemme shampoo first. Before I found out about that, I used Absorbine SuperPoo which is also good and lasts for ages, but is much more expensive. Please post an "after" picture.

Cowboy Magic also do a green stain remover, can't remember exactly what its called, comes in a spray. That worked well on my grey's spectacular poo stains.

No I don't think bathing too much is an issue as long as you're not using really strong inappropriate products all the time.

Bleach and a high pressure hose?

I've found that tescos shampoo (just the cheap stuff) and then a go with the whitening shampoo that comes in a purple bottle (sorry - forgotten the name of it but i'll have a look when i go up the yard) works well on silver (constantly tries to be a dun...). Otherwise it's a bath for a couple of days before a show after every ride to get all the ingrained dirt out and then hope for the best on show day!

swarfega fantastic for stubborn stains and then try bathing in Daz washing powder (do a skin test first justin case) it has those flakes of blue bag in it. then finish off with some net curtain whitener.

It can be done I promise I can get him to go from this:

I don't bath him bewtween comeptitions I just scrub him the night before
First off go and buy the following items:
Washing up liquid
Persil non bio or sensitive washing poweder or liquid
Glo White/Oxyclean or an equivalent Net Whitener
Whitening shampoo
Silicone mane and tail conditioner
Shampoo as normal with whitening shampoo then apply washing up liquid to stubborn areas and scrub with rubber curry comb.
Mix up a solution of washing powder in warm but not hot water. Use a sponge and apply the solution to the area, use a curry comb and scrub gently.
Leave on and wash the tail or an another bit.
Wash off well with plenty of cold water.
Mix up a solution of Oxyclean in warm water and apply with sponge, leave on for about 10 minutes.
Rinse thoroughly with warm water and make sure all traces of soap are gone.
Pat dry, repeat if necessary.
Finally spary liberal amounts of silicone to stain prone areas - this will make it harder for stains to penetrate the hairs.
You might want to spray his belly and legs weekly just to build up a barrier.
Hils is an absolute hippo - he wallows in mud pooh and pee! and he positively glows when he is finished!

He also has really senstive skin and so far he has never reacted to any of the products we use I just always make sure I rinse and rinse and rinse.

I'm guessing he is on rubber matting with a skinny bed............Am I right?

On the assumption that I am, a deeper bed help as pee soaks into the bed and not the horse and poo gets covered with shavings/straw rather than being laid on. I attemped a rubber matting/skinny bed combo with my coloured mare and got similar results. She now has a full shavings bed over her rubber matting!!! I also turn her out at night on a bald patch and keep her in during the day as this stops her getting sun burnt and bothered by the flies, saves on bedding and keeps her much cleaner.

Wash with Bloom by Hydrohane to clean the ground in grime, the a whitening shampoo.

Another vote here for Cowboy Magic Greenstain remover (think that's what it's called). You spray it on and you really can see dirt and stains dissolve before your eyes. I then use Baby Lotion wipes to wipe the last the the stain away. Expensive but worth for those of us too lazy to bath their horse very often.

I know what you mean about stains soaking through rugs at night. I bought the lightest turnout rug I could find - nothing more than a waterproof sheet - and use that in the stable at night.

Grey horses - who'd 'ave 'em!

get a lightweigth turnout rug - as it is waterproof nothing will soak thru. Be careful with cowboy magic as my mare was really allergic to it

Whitening powder by Supreme products. Mix it into a paste the consistency of yoghurt. I actually made it thinner a had so much to cover with my coloured. Slap it on all over the white bits and left it on over night. It dries chalky. Just brush it off the following morning. She was gleaming white. I also use Cowboy magic green stain remover. That is also brilliant. You do spots with that and you dont have to bath first just squirt on a dry horse, rub in and wipe off afterwards with a baby wipe.
