For anyone interested in what REALLY happens at most rodeos

that has opened my eyes! i always thought that rodeos were cruel but i have never been to one and have seen videos of rodeos on you tube that show cruelty! cruelty happens in all equestrian sports and show jumping (most of the local shows i go to) some sort of abuse is happening mainly people beating there horses if they refuse ect. i never new anything about rodeo and now after reading that my views have completely changed! thanks for that! really made me realise how niave i have been!!!

Ooh the cowboys I know would like that very much!! Should I offer your services to them

Stella, of course you're right it would indeed be very scary for wild horses but then I can't imagine it's very nice for these tame ones either. Perhaps we should strap the cowboys loins, stab them with spur and call it sport!

[/ QUOTE ] So why were you disappointed that they weren't wild horses?

i commented on the video last night as that video was disgusting

HOWEVER i have been to rodeos in Australia and America and both were well run with animals looking fit and healthy and no cruelty. both times we had a fab time and i know if there had been the slightest bit of cruelty etc we would have gone straight away!

Not without putting in a complaint though first I hope.

There is an annual rodeo in the village next to me and it is coming up later in the summer. I must remember to take my camera with me and get you all some snapshots of what happens at the end of the rodeos!! The first time I saw it I was almost speechless....and that takes a heck of a lot but then I don't have to tell you lot that.

Stella,

I suppose because prior to seeing the rodeo for myself I'd always assumed the horses had a chance to 'win' in so far as I thought they could dismount the cowboys, I was 'disappointed' to discover they had little/no chance. I actually thought (stupidly as it turns out) that this 'sport' was some kind 'out dated' way of backing a horse. The fact that the horses have to buck in an effort to escape the discomfort of the strap thingy came as a shock to me.

[/ QUOTE ] No offence, but using a wild horse in that situation wouldn't be giving a horse a chance to 'win'. I just don't see your logic

As for the bucking strap, I know little to nothing about Rodeos, but I do know that a horse has a sensitive area (in a ticklish way) where the bucking strap is situated that tends to produce bucking! That is why in basic stable management, people are taught to be careful not to leave a belly strap on a rug fastened and pull the rug off backwards. It isn't because the horse might be upset or spook, its because you could be on the ground in a tight space with bucking horse!! Obviously if you fit something that touches the area and you get the bucks, you can then reinforce them by the rider coming off, treats, being put back in the stall etc - just as you would train any other movement.

Not sure what your point is, Stella

[/ QUOTE ]Well unless I'm more menapausal than I know, I think I explained it, so I don't know why you don't understand what I'm saying! I guess that makes us both confused

1. If you are interested in the welfare of the horse, I'm confused by your idea that using a wild horse in a rodeo is preferrable and therefore you were disapointed to find that they didn't!

2. There is a perfectly resonable way in which a bucking strap could work without causing discomfort contrary to what you have believed!

The spurring that goes on in a rodeo in the US is not worse than what goes in pony club in England! :-p

Seriously these horses and bulls know their job - the spurring or bucking strap can not be that bad, look how quickly the quiet down.

But the best rodeo events are the Mutten Busting, The Pick Up/Ride race, Wild ride.

Hi TIA...
I agree that there are two sides.
I was commenting on the particular video I saw.
You must admit it made awful viewing.
Poor creatures..
I have seen many cowboys who truly love their horses.
I am a particular fan of the real gentle western riding.
There is cruelty in all equestrian sports seen it many times and reported it.
Hope you are all well over there..

Aww we're doing great over here - thanks for asking. Hope all is well with you too.

Some things viewed on that video were not nice and in my opinion were cruel, although the majority of the incidents looked like accidents with horses doing what they do best....not what they are asked!

It's difficult to make up opinions based on photos or short-clip videos because we have not been given the full story and of course naturally most people would go "
shocked.gif
" and for some, then rationale takes over and they watch closer to see whether the tape is doctored or start to question what happened and why it happened. Sometimes the answer remains the same in that what they are seeing is just cruel and sometimes there is a plausible answer generally being accidental.

Oh me too. Heck of a bond they have with their horses I have to say.

I dont think the original poster on the other post was having ago at rodeos in general, just the traetment shown in THAT rodeo. Some people took it further nad tared all rodeos with the same brush unfortunately.

I wasn't having a go about rodeos at all. I was just shocked, upset and confused about the footage I saw. I warned people that the footage was shocking.

I wasn't saying all rodeas were like that, though I'm sure there are a few with that sort of behaviour.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hon, reread what i said, I was saying you WEREN'T having ago at rodeos (which is what it has spiralled too) and that you were merely highlighting the behaviour shown in those vids....
