for anyone who thinks Polite doesn't suit piebalds...

He's gorgeous! Must admit I already knew the Polite stuff suits piebald cobs, mine wears it and looks as stunning as he always has done. Not that I'm biased or anything ;)

The whole idea is to be seen.... Not to look like a policeman on horseback. Do people honestly not wear hi viz just because the horse is coloured??

The ponies carrying the kids in the village don't look like policemen either but the hi viz does help me spot them when I drive past. I don't slow down coz I think I will get a ticket for speeding.

I have Polite stuff and I ride a piebald cob (15.2, to be 16H), primarily to be seen and to slow down drivers and it works! Darcy does have his feathers, but I don't think drivers notice that, they just see the hi-viz and Polite and slow right down!

And what a lovely horse in that video, patiently waiting at the lights, bless him :D

.

I wear hi-viz and Big Fuzzy is coloured. There, I've said it! :p

Even so, some dog walkers say 'oh, I didn't see you' I ask, so what part of a large black and white horse, with a rider wearing a hi-viz (pink) waistcoat or (genuine) hi-viz yellow police jacket, did you not see?

Do people really care if Hi viz 'suits' a horse? I had no idea. I think its all pretty ugly on any horse but as long as it makes you visible what does it matter...?

:D Ive had someone say similar to me, when their dog ran and jumped up at my horse, 'sorry didnt see you or Id have put him on a lead'.

Exercise sheet, leg bands on the horse, headband on hat and a tabard WITH FLASHING FAIRY LIGHTS on me :D:D

Ah, my misunderstanding, I thought the POLITE stuff was intended to make motorists think twice because of the 'police' like design and I thought the intention of the thread was to show that the police do use coloured horses so the POLITE stuff would work. I will toddle off and have some badly needed sleep I think:)

I have never said to not wear hi viz on a coloured, I think everyone should wear hi viz.

I just don't think that a polite vest on a coloured cob with mane and feathers everywhere is going to be as effective as a big bay. At the end of the day the whole purpose of the polite range is to make a statement which I personally think is more effective on a horse that looks like a police horse.

Agree, lol :D

There is no way that a 14.2 hairy piebald is going to be confused with a big brown police horse, so we wear bog standard, much cheaper, normal hi vis

Your 'bog standard' may actually be better. For example I prefer a normal hi viz yellow neck band compared to the chequered neck bands because these don't help you to be seen earlier.

I think the POLITE is the most amusing piece of HI VIZ available and it does work and I think most of the public find it quite funny and slow down just at the cheek of it!

Well what I mean is, that you should not NOT wear POLITE tabards because you think it would look daft (i.e. not a police horse) on a cob, or a pony, or a palomino, or a zebra. I just think you should wear hi-viz, any and including POLITE, if you are on a road, full stop.

Ok, obviously I do think the range is supposed to make you look more like the police but overall, the intended effect is safety, it works, wear it.

erm my 14.2 piebald is just as entitled to wear Polite gear as any other horse

We were the first round here to get it, and the difference it has made has been amazing. Who cares what ANYONE else thinks, as long as cars can see us both and slow down ? We are not trying to be police, we are trying to stay safe and alive.

Sorry, but comments like that really make me angry !!

Whatta gorgeous police horse: very much like my boy in fact!!!

We ventured out in our "Polite" gear this week & did notice a difference from boy-racer who actually said "sorry love" whilst applying brakes!! + man-in-white-van who seemed ***** scared to pass us in a narrow bit!!

Then a couple of dog walkers saw us and asked whether we were "on duty" or not; I said well...... have a closer look at what's on the back of my jacket - and they got it! Thought it was a fab idea and they'd had several close shaves as well on the roads.

Shysmum

I didn't say you weren't entitled to wear the Polite hi vis. Wear what you want, I actually said that MY coloured native didn't look like a police horse ( tongue in cheek.....joke)

Incidentally, my daughter uses the Polite stuff, and she rides a liver chestnut roan welshD
Suppose that's slightly more police horse like than mine. :D. JOKE

Perhpas they think you're all special constables? Or under cover? Or perhaps they actually can't tell a Section A from a 17h warmblood? Who cares, the stuff works so keep wearing it. Perhaps it's time for a most unlikely police horse contest?

Does it really matter so long as it does the job and makes you stand out?

The idea is not to 'look like the police', it's to catch a drivers eye and stop you from being mowed down.

Exactly - the Polite range is endorsed by the Police, so if it was looking like impersonating a police officer, they wouldn't be able to sell it!

What are you guys talking about coloureds look fab in everything- especially piebalds .... :D (not that I am biased in any way- the coloured cob in the profile pic is my baby)

Capriole

I read that as well....... ;D

It is hi vis, the lettering is eye catching and it makes you more visible. Whether a study has been done to prove it is more effective than ' normal' hi vis, I don't know.
Personally, it's not for me, I think it's over priced and I'll continue with my normal hi vis tabard, hat band, string vest for Star and her leg bands.

Interestingly, I was once told by a mounted police officer that coloured horses were not chosen as police horses in West Yorks because they were TOO visible. They were an easy target because of their lack of anonymity. They were just too eye catching.
Times they are achanging.......
