Hello

I am just curious what people would class my mare as for her colouring. I hadn't realised all the different classifications of markings until I just recently looked at the info on the BSPA website.

I would of said she is Bay Skewbald. I originally was calling her a tricolour but realise this is probably wrong as she only has black in her mane and tail and her right knee.

She is Cob x WB turning 3 in October and I have had her for 7 months.

Faracat - what is the official term for a red (chestnut) and white coloured then? I am never 100% sure of this. Is it just skewbald?

Traditional English name would be 'skewbald'.

Piebald = black and white patches.
Skewbald = any colour (except black) and white patches.

A chestnut and white patched horse would be genetically chestnut (two copies of chestnut gene) plus one (or more) of the 'spotting' genes. You can work out which spotting gene(s) from the coat pattern or to make sure you can get DNA tests done.

BTW 'spotting' genes are not 'appaloosa' genes, they are a whole different kettle of fish!
