To everyone who has or has had their horse on full livery, do you pay your YO to stand with your horse for the vet, farrier etc or is it just "part of the service"? Thankyou!

it should be included in the full livery as part of the care, however some yards will leave it out of the contract to make extra money.

i charge £5 holding fee, this includes catching holding, turning back out, sweeping up after farrier etc. it is not included in my full-part livery. its 50mins a set of shoes! ive plenty of other jobs to do in the day! and every yard ive been on charge for this. do check contract though.

Part of the service. Full livery means that your horse is looked after as if it belonged to them for daily, routine care which includes holding horse for shoeing etc.

Thankies! I am the YO and have never charged for "holding the horse" but as some of you in my position will know it does take up time to bring in, wash feet, stand with them, turn them back out, tidy up! I don't mind doing it as my horses get done at the same time but I never seem to get a "Thankyou" and its starting to bug me a little. Just wanted to compare what other yards did. Each owner gets a text off me to say what time and day the blacksmith is coming, but not one of them replies to say thankyou??

Full livery should be exactly that. The horses should be brought in, turned out, groomed, bathed, held etc etc. If it is PART livery, then that is completely different. Surely thanks is getting your invoices paid on time!!

I must admit, I would never think of saying thank you for holding a horse for the farrier. I say thank you for plenty of other things that are done, but it wouldn't occur to me that getting a horse ready for the farrier was anything out of the ordinary - no different to putting a haynet or feed in!

We do full livery so everything done but exercise (which is charged as extra). Im used to people not saying thankyou it seems to be part of the job unfortunately, either that or I am way too polite!!!

Interesting - to me full livery would also include exercise. If I am at the yard and someone does something for me, then I would say thank you. If someone did something for the horse i.e. clipping, and they did a great job, or the horse was particularly difficult, I would say thank you. I just wouldn't text to say thank you for holding the horse or bringing it in!

Would you not reply to your YO if he/she text you to say "Blacksmith/vet coming.......at........". I think its rude to ignore it.

Um - they wouldn't text me to tell me that. They would call me if the vet were required and then ring to let me know the result (when I would obviously say thank you!). If it were vaccinations, then they wouldn't even tell me that they were being done (it would be on the board so I would see a few weeks in advance that they were due). Basically, I would be more likely to get a phone call and have a conversation than receive a text.

Do all of your liveries ignore you when you text them?

I text them because it is quicker than calling them all individually. They knew when blacksmith was due (which week) but not which day as they always call late the night before. I text them as a matter of courtesy to let them know! I find it a bit rude when I dont get a reply from any of them?! Same with worming, I always send a text first to check it is alright to worm their horse, I would never just go and worm someones horse without asking first! I text because I haven't got the time to call each one, it has never been a problem before!!

I think the main difference is that my sister's liveries just expect this stuff to be done, and be put ontheir bill (for wormers/shoeing etc) the following month. What I meant was that I wondered whether your liveries actually want the info - maybe it is worth askin them as it will save you a lot of time if they don't really need to be asked every time you do something. Do you worm the yard at the same time or would you allow some of the liveries to do their own worming?

I just like to keep them all in the know. I would want to know what was going on and when with my horses as I think most other people would! All the horses are wormed together on the same day (slightly off subject there)! Ive got the answers I asked for anyway so thankyou to people who have answered my question!

you do same as me, i tell people before and after things are done, like worming as you say, as i myself would like to know. my liveries all thank me though as they like to take an interest, without actually having to think about it too much!

That's what "full livery" means at my yard too, everything included except exercise (which is extra). I still say thank you to the staff though, even though it is their job!! They're lovely people and are looking after my horse in the cold and pissing rain when I am stuck at work so I am very grateful to them, even though that's what I pay for. I believe this is what is called 'common courtesy'?!!!!

It is part of the service at our yard. During the summer if the horse is living out it costs an extra £5 to bring it in, however, I keep Tyler on Full livery so doesn't cost any extra.

It would be the same with the vet, unless you took the mickey out of our YO I would expect.

My YM used to do this sometimes until I told her that I don't have my mobile phone at work (we are not allowed them), so I was getting the messages about 4 hours after the farrier had finished and gone!
