Even as i type this question, it sounds stupid to me, but I am a firm believer that the only really stupid question is the one you don't ask - so here goes.

If you loan a horse from someone, would you expect to make some kind of payment, token or otherwise? As i understand it, a loan doesn't involve payment to the actual owner. So if i loaned a horse, it would essentially be a "free" horse, and then I would be responsible for all the costs of care, livery, feed, vets bills, insurance, etc.

If I loaned a horse ( which I currently do) then I would not expect to make any payment to the owner so long as I was taking on all the financial and emotional responsibility of looking after the horse thereafter.

Sounds about right - full loan to me is that owner technically places the horse in my care and then I would be responsible for all costs.

typically 'Full Loan' means that the loaner is wholly responsible for day to day care and costs, and the owner has no involvement, although it really depends on what is meant by 'loan'..it can mean different things to different people, for instance will the horse remain in his current home, will the owner have any involvement, is this a proven competition horse etc?
usually the two parties will come to a suitable arrangement, and agree on something that suits them.
It's unusual for a 'full loaner' to pay the owner, although there are probably some circumstances where that would be a requirement, especially if the owner has something very special.

I've had horses on loan in the past and have never paid the owner. However a friend had a horse on loan from a riding school and they charged "rent" for him. It worked out quite expensive with livery costs too so they didn't keep him for long.

If you loan a horse you pay all costs of horse nothing to owner, if you LEASE a horse you pay all costs of horse and payment to owner

agree with ZigZag I loan 4 horses and dont pay any of the owners for the priviledge, but I am responsible for everything involved to keep the horses, including vet bills and insurance. I used to Lease a horse, where I paid for everything and 50.00 per month to the owner.

im getting my loan horse at the weekend im paying nothing to the owner but im paying everything for the horses upkeep as it is in my care,so no you shouldnt pay anything to the owner if it is a full loan
