For people who work shifts/long hours..... What is your routine for a stabled horse??

Just interested in how you manage a stable kept horse.

I work between 8am and 8:30pm depending on what shift I am on. Which means I will have to turn out at 7/7:30 and bring in at 9! :O
 
I work shifts and am away a lot. I have a wonderful horsey husband who does them. Before that, I HAD to have the horse on full livery as she needed the routine..

ps I would say you need part livery, so the horse is turned out and brought in, and given hay and water for you - it doesn't matter if you muck out early or late, but the horse will still have a decent routine..
 
I turn out in the morning on my long days (8 to 8) and my mum does them in the evening for me seeing as they are at home rather than on a yard - would really struggle otherwise. Later shifts 12 - 9 I do everything in the morning so they just need bringing in, and short shifts 8 to 6 I do it all after work! Roll on spring 2013 and light evenings again :)
 
When i was full time, horses went out in the dark and came in in the dark. I did the stables in the morning when on 11am starts and in the evening when on 7am starts.

They were fine with it and So was I, I loved the cold clear moonlit nights as I could get tacked up and go for a lovely peaceful hack :)
 
Just to clarify, I don't work 8-8. I either do 8-3 or 1-8:30 so I have plenty of time to get feeds/hay ready etc, and yes I could get someone to bring in when i am on a late shift, but I thought as he prefers to be out anyway he probably wouldn't mind coming in til late. Everything would be ready for him, just bring in and change rug then done :)
 
I get up at 5:30 and turn out mine & my friend's pony then muck out mine before work. So he get's brought in by staff in the afternoon (on part-livery) and I go up after work to ride & prepare for next day whilst counting down the days until he is back out 24/7.
 
When I first saw your hours on your original post I thought "Blimey! That doesn't leave you much horsey time!"
I work alternate shifts, 1 week 6-2, the next 2-10... earlies, YO turns out, I fetch in, do jobs etc. Lates, they turn out very early anyway, so he's already out (assisted DIY) maybe some thing worth looking into for you?
 
I feel a conversation brewing with my manager, something along the lines of please can I work 9-4 every day! Other staff only work certain shifts due to children/distance travelling from work so I only see it fair :)

Failing that I will enquir about assisted, my yard does do it I just wanted to keep costs down :)
 
My yard owner feeds and hays my horse in the morning and checks water. I start work at 7.30 and have a few hours break at half ten till one so he waits in till i get there. i know he is fine as he has plenty food to munch on, i finsh work at five and bring him in. he isnt out very long in the winter as there is not light near are feild so i have to get him in when i can see him lol. he makes up for lost time in the summer by going out 24/7. The only thing is... i can see it being a longg cold winter. as ive had snow already and its october!!!:eek:
