Before you all scream health and safety at me I KNOW it was completely my own fault.

Last week i decided to full clip my horse (Ive been clipping for over 5 years in the same way with no problem !!)
i was clipping inside a barn with doors open and as some of you may remember it was very windy.

I had the usual baseball cap on to keep clippings out of my hair overalls to keep hair out of my clothes and a circuit breaker on my extension cable -- all fine soooo far.
on the evening after i got home my airways felt a little blocked.

the day after no amount of inhaler was working and anybody who's got asthma will realise the constant coughing makes you cough up 'stuff' off your lungs (sorry its yukky !!) mine contained clipped hair !!!!!!

all that protective equipment meant nothing with the wind blowing the hair into my nostrils !!

so take a tip from me -- if you've got asthma and don't wear a mask id suggest you do.

im on a strong course of antibiotics and steroids now and although my horse looks great in his new clip i don't have the strength to ride and feel blooming awful.
and just to confirm I KNOW its my own fault !!!!!
they say you learn by your mistakes please learn by mine.

Oh grim, poor you. I would never have thought the hair could get that far

Good advice though. I have mild asthma but luckily I don't normally get set off by clipping, perhaps I'm just lucky that we have a good area to clip in. I tend to be allergic to the hair instead!

oh thats not good at all. Im a chronic asthmatic and have tried the mask for the very reasons you state, but i find that I cant breathe properly with it on. So mine are all now clipped in a stable and if its particularly windy i pull the top door to.

hope you feel better soon

I buy medical masks, as they are not quite as hot as the preformed models.

I have both asthma and perennial rhinitis from allergies to dust and horses. So means I used steroid inhalers and nose drops daily.

Clipping without a mask is asking for trouble and even in the healthy, its not ideal to get all the muck and dust in your nose and lungs.

Makes you realise how much cack actually makes it into ones lungs, scary if you ask me, even if not asthmatic. I often wonder about it when brushing dried mud off and getting face fulls of dust.

I get very bad too. I've only got 1 horse, so only clip about 3 times a year. Before I clip I take anti histamine tablets. I wear goggles and a mask, and have my inhaler to hand, and it still takes about 24 hours for me to fully recover. (I can't deal with hay either). Every time I've finished clipping I think to myself afterwards 'I'll just pay someone to do it next time', but never do!
