Contracts,

Do you worry about any possible problems if things go wrong or do you feel you'll deal with things if and when they arise.

I have been on so many yards, including professionals, where no-one asks me to sign a written agreement or anything but I am just taking on a livery and have spent what seems like half a day putting a contract together.

Thoughts please.

Or on the other side of the coin if you joined a yard or asked for a professional job to be done and weren't asked to sign anything would it worry you.

I have not signed a contract where I am now, but it is a professional BHS approved yard.

In general, I do think it is helpful to have a clear agreement or at least know what is expected of you as a livery, so that things don't go wrong later. I think people involved with horses often have very strong opinions on precisely how they should be managed.

Based on my own experience I would not worry too much about moving on to a big professional yard without a contract, as long as I know it is run professionally. From my perspective as a livery, conflicts may be more likely when the yard isn't run as a professional business.... and the smaller the yard, the more personal things could get. So I think it is great that you are thinking through these things in advance.

We have a very comprehensive contract as it helps us to keep clarity. We have mainly very good customers who respect it but have had a few 'interesting' sorts who just did not and one way or the other they left under not great terms. I much prefer having clear T&C so those customers (who have sanity) know what is and is not included.

Legally, a paper contract does not add much but professionally it matters to us
