what do forage do you feed (i.e hay/haylage) and why?

I feed my gelding good quality hay as he is allergic to some types of haylage and my mare is feed haylage as she doesn't keep weight very well and this seems to help

Haylage - yard will supply hay but they would rather not ... they make their own haylage.

When I lived in the Midlands, only hay was available. Now further North (and rather wetter), seems haylage is the more readily available.

Why only stabled horses?

Both of mine are out, and both have a hay hutch each. One has it filled with haylage, and one had slightly rationed hay

Both,depends on hay quality,if he starts coughing he goes onto haylage

however he looked bloody good on haylage last yr,will see how his condition goes if he drops off i wont up his hard feed i will just go back to haylage again

I found the haylage works out a little cheaper than hay to feed also!

haylage for condition - don't have to feed so much hard food - apart from one boy who gets colic on it, so he's on hay (and all the straw he eats out of his bed!)

Mine has hay - haylage makes her come out in lumps, apart from blue bag Horsehage (which she isn't terribly fond of anyway!)

Mine's on half and half. We fill old alfa-a bags up, i put hay in half then top up with haylage to the top.

I would have him on full haylage if i could but he becomes a bit loose on it.

Hay but its great quality and she loves it, had a nasty surprise one day when I gave Mins some haylage her face blew up and had huge lumps all over her body incl her lady bits it was horrendous had to get vet out never seen anything like it in my life so since then I have played safe she does well on hay (dry) so if it's working then great, plus she seems to get hyper on haylage except marksway but thats too expensive for me to sustain although I love the smell of haylage

hay as cheaper, can get from yard, don't need any extra and hyper tb which can hype up on haylage

I feed Pickle Haylage, mainly because yard supplies it. However he is a hard one weight wise so probably does do him some good

haylage. It is cheaper and better quality than the hay that is supplied to the yard

Haylage, dont have a lot of storage space so can keep wrapped bales outside

I feed both, hay is good and I've found a mixture of hay & haylage works for mine

I also feed readigrass at night

Both, Half haylage and half hay in one big haynet, they stuff the haylage and the hay last a bit longer.
