Well with horses on working livery. How much do you pay, what do you get for your money and how many hours a week can they use your horse?

i myself am not on working livery but have known people be - just make sure you find the right riding school.

i have known of horses being put on working livery who couldnt jump due to injuries - they were used for jumping lessons.... its very handy if you have a friend on the yard who can keep an eye on things - as in the case above - the YO didnt know i knew the horses owner - i mentioned it to the horses owner who promptly moved him!

however... i have known other riding schools be really good and stick to what is in the agreement - re working hours, kinds of riders etc.

if i was going to put one on working livery - i would find a recommended riding school, where the facilities look clean and tidy, the horses look well cared for, the is BHS ARBS approved etc, ensure that they have the correct license from the council, ensure there is a set contract whereby you can call in unexpected to see how your horse/pony is. and ideally have someone on the inside who can report back to you! others dont look after your horse as you do yourself but you def need to find the right place - when i considered it - i looked around a few places and found one equestrian college that had a good working livery scheme - i would have choose there but i decided it was too far away and i my situation changed whereby i didnt need livery anymore.

good luck

btw - if you are looking for working livery what area are you as maybe a HHO could suggest some good places!

when i was looking - it was about the same price as part livery.

Both our horses are on working livery and it works brilliantly for us. Our yard sticks to out contract completely, always ask permission if they plan do anything else

We get about just under £100 per horse off the normal price for the livery type we have. Also if our horses are used to roughly 7 hours a week! (maximum) If they are not using them for any reason if they get hypo (as my sisters horse does) they exercise them/free school/lunge them free of charge!

Just make sure you have a good contract coverering every aspect, and if you find a yard try and talk to some current working liveries and what there horses do per week

Used to be on working livery, was a complete rip off!! My horse lived out in a field with about 35 other horses, there was no grass any time of year, they did get a bit of hay in winter. He was supposed to be used for only 9 hours a week but I know they used him more than that. He was allowed to work on saturday mornings and sunday afternoons and then for 3 hours during the week. Feed, hay and all general care was included in the cost, but basically they didn't bring your horse in unless it was being used! We were paying £225/month by the time we left! To top it all off it was a big competition yard as well so the schools were always busy, even when there weren't lessons with the showjumpers so could hardly ride in the school! Also if I went down to see Jiggy it was as if they thought I was there as their slave and wouldn't let me bring him in until the whole yard was done and swept! I had no contract, except for a piece of paper saying I had to give a months notice if I wanted to take my horse off the school, so I don't know how they could do this. Anyway rant over! If you can possibly get away with not putting your horse on working livery then IMO don't do it! I know plenty of people that are happy with their horses on working livery but I just had a very bad experience!

I think if you get a decent yard it is beneficial as it is for us, as we find it hard to get up the yard weekdays and without working livery we would have to pay to have our horses exercised

My cob mare is on working livery and i pay 35 pounds per week this included her stable all feed daily turnout and in summer grazing, the schooluse her only once a week for a pony club lesson, its a brilliant deal, i am very lucky and realise most yards charge alot more, she gets mucked out fed, turned out rugs changed etc there are no extra add ons,i just pay for farrier and wormers.
