For those currently out there looking for a new horse, just in case you have not yet discovered this or it may be that you don’t scrawl through all of the online horse marketing websites, free advertising websites and magazines etc when looking for a horse or if you have found the one want and have been to view the horse.

It would be wise to just do a little check before you get your wallet out, it seems that quite a few horse dealers and private advertisers try their luck a bit depending on where they choose to advertise and in which areas of the country as many horse dealers (well respected ones too) that import have deal from more than one yard.

A quick google search of the mobile number is all it takes, I don’t know about anyone else but I for one would be pretty gutted if I had just purchase a horse for say 5.5k when the same horse was advertised else where for 3.5k, you’d be surprised how many sellers are doing it.

Never really crossed my mind that people do that..but when you think about it people probably do quite often! Thanks for the heads up, will be looking out for that :D

I've also noticed that they sometimes put different details into different sites. One horse in particular which I viewed last year when it was for sale from the field for £850 is now advertised by a dealer for £2500 on several sites. On the first ad, on a free site, it is admitted that this horse won't pass a vet "owing to a previous injury". On another site there are apparently "no known issues". I know that this particular horse does have scars from a previous injury. I also know that the horse which is advertised as suitable for a novice has been passed round several homes in the last year. TBF the dealer has put a video on their own site which makes it obvious that the horse rides like a very strong giraffe.

Yes I have also noticed this, quite a mine field I'd say.

Thanks for info. I will be looking for my first horse in a few months time and I'm terrified of being ripped off in some way. I've had several on loan and been riding since I was 5 but this will be my first experience of buying. Eak!

This is true, someone I know is advertising the same horse for £2,500 on one site and £4,500 on another

I would now definitely google numbers, can also help to see how many "other" horses advertisers have sold as some dealers can pose as individuals...

I love the internet :D...

Thanks for the heads-up. I consider myself very lucky - am pony hunting for my kids, but think I have found one without having to go the gamut of the adverts - where I have found livery (thought I'd better find a home for pony before finding the pony) there is one for sale which suits us fine and this way it's not an unknown. Having her vetted on Friday.

I was wary about having to go the adverts route, and hadn't even considered that sellers might be using tactics like that. One to remember for the future (I'll want a horse for me too!)

I always google phone numbers. Didn't know what to think though when google came back with lots of adverts for a prostitute from one phone number.

I didn't go see the horse

I always google the phone numbers - you wouldn't believe the amount of dealers who try and claim to be private sellers. Nothing against buying from a dealer but if they're dishonest about that then would question what else they're lying about!

Well, I suppose horses aren't cheap to keep... that's one way to afford the livery bill

I would never have thought of googling the number. Sounds so obvious now you say it, but it wouldn't have occurred to me. You do pick up so many useful things on this forum.
