Why???? just being nosey, people are constantly moaning about feed prices at the yard, yet they could easily cut down and still give a balanced diet!! lots of owners seem to feed nuts and mix, making up huge feeds and then finding the horse is OTT bargy, spooky etc.......

We mix nuts and mix to decrease costs - mix and nuts lasts longer! we buy cheap nuts and basic brand mix and horses look really well on it.

I feed Baileys Top Line Conditioning nuts and Spillers Senior conditioning mix. The nuts to keep condition on him and the mix for all the nutrients a gentleman of his advanced years requires. He is 31 in January.

same here, did feed the anicent TB Top Spec flakes and she was super on them. Changed to baileys No 4 cubes and she looks super

and she is on Dengie Extra mix.

[/ QUOTE ] Why does nuts and mix last longer than just nuts or mix fed on their own?

We do this and alfa a. But I think were going to stop using top line & start using calm & condition instead

I must be the only person in the world that has a horse that drops weight like no tomoorow on c&c

Was really impressed with baileys no 4 though, just a pain to get it around here

I cant praise Baileys No 4 enough, Id never have thought something so easily fed and not in bulk either could have made the ancient TBs coat shine up & her put a bit of weight on when shes previously lost it. She almost looks ten again!!

I'm led to believe that nuts and mix are practically the same thing, just in different form! I am told nuts are the result of the same stuff in a mix, just ground down and put in 'nut' form which offers a more balanced form of nutrition. Or so I am told anyway lol

I'm sure there's more into it then that lol!

I don't feed nuts, I dampen my feed, years ago my horse bolted his feed, and the nuts formed a 'concrete' from me wetting his feed (according to what the vets said) and he choked! I had the vet out 3 times to the yard, they tubed him and couldn't get past the feed, so then I was referred to take him in so they could get a camera down his throat to dislodge the blockage!

Well if any of mine drop weight il put them back on the topline but just wanted to try them on the calm and condition as our 4 year olds coat is quite dry and scurfy and she itches like mad so I want to try her on the C&C and see if I can see a difference

You can but try, evryone else I know swears by it and something called show mix ( any one esle tried ), I think I was just unlucky, it may have been the lack of Barley, but not sure

My instructor feeds corn oil too! It was my equine dentist what told me to use veggie oil, and she's an equine nutritionist! Got degrees in it all blah blah blah! I guess that's the horsey world for you, different people, different opinions and different experiences lol!

[/ QUOTE ] They usually are very similar in content, although mixes normally have a slightly higher cereal (and therefore starch) content, because the cereal grains make the mixes look nicer to the human eye!

(Obviously this is assumng similar types of nuts/mixes - ie horse & pony mix is likely to have more cereals than horse & pony nuts, but racehorse nuts will probably have more cereals than cool mix!)

i used to buy nuts and mix BUT it was because my mare couldn't have mix as it sent her loopy and my gelding refuses to get nuts so had no choice.

I've dont get why people would feed both either. I feed nuts usually. Lately Ive cut their feed right down to basics so they get just speedi beet and their joint & all round supplement. My competition horse gets the same with some Barley rings added.

Mix IMO is false economy - I remember when I did some feed courses when I worked in a store, every rep from every company said mix is exactly the same as nuts but more expensive, its only made into a mix because people prefer it as it looks more appetising to them! I'd therefore never feed a mix unless a feed didnt come in cube form or the horse was picky etc.
