How do you feed hay? Do use nets or put it on the surface?

One of mine has a touch of mud fever so am using the school for his daily turnout, but am concerned he may consume some sand if fed off the floor. However he is a net trasher and don't want him to damage the arena fence...

What do you do?

Thanks in advance.

Either in a hay net, or on the ground. I put a folded tarpaulin sheet down underneath the hay, and weigh it down with old traffic cones. This catches all the hay bits, which otherwise stick to my sand and rubber surface. (It also helps with spook busting!).

If its very windy, I use a couple of old turnout rugs to put the hay on (less likely to blow around than the tarpaulin.)

Thanks everyone.

Being up in the hills, I think it may be too windy for tarp, but I do have a spare mat so will place his haylage on that (great idea Faracat)!

How about a big trug? Saves having to lug a mat in and out of the arena when he's in there.

ETA: You'll probably need to attach the trug to the fence to stop it getting tipped over/blown away when empty.
