...that I think I can officially say I have successfully rehabbed my first horse :D (with tonnes of help from Oberon, my official rehab agony aunt :-)

I have posted about archie before if any remember: Archie has been lame / bad back jobby for years, and I didn't know what to do, he kept coming sound again, then going lame again but for no apparent reason :( he is such a lamb, and never bucks, kicks or anything, he just never indicated there was much wrong apart from major loss of performance, but as I wasn't riding him much (uni etc) it was hard to put my finger on.

Anyway, decided to have work up with vet, who diagnosed caudal hoof pain. He recommended an MRI, but I couldnt be affording that, so just went for it barefoot!

His shoes came off in January, and as of today, he is back in work, we are working up from 15mins lunging and 10mins hacking a day at the moment. Have had the physio to him (twice!) to sort his back out, plus a new, much wider saddle the fatty :)

He is tracking up, powering through from behind, not running off anymore, quieter in his mouth, cantering on the right leg, not disuniting, I could go on and on... The last two weeks since I started riding him he was a bit of a handful, kept trying to deck me as I mounted, I think he was expecting it to hurt again... but yesterday and today he has been completely chilled about it all, major break through :D

Since Jan he has been 24/7 in our self enclosed stable yard / arena etc, (we are lucky :) ) but for the last week or so, he has been getting an hours turn out, he thinks he has died and gone to heaven after months of hay!

And to top it all, I bought some rosehips for him to try, and he wolfs them done happily with all his other supps LOL

Sorry it got long and boring, but I SO wanted to share with people :D :D

This is him, looking shiny and happy, (I think) *:)

So pleased to hear all the good news - he looks absolutly fantastic too!!
Keep the exciting updates coming!!!

That's fantastic news, well done! What a gorgeous horse, and I think he looks happy too.

Well done for being brave enough to rehab him at home too. My boy is at Rockley because I wasn't quite so brave but he's doing well too.

I guess there must be something in this barefoot stuff after all ;);) lol!

Well done that greats what are your plans for him in the future ?
Mine has been without shoes seven months now he's different because he was never lame I just tried because I was curious he is working between 45 mins and an hour and a quarter six days a week I restrict turnout between 10 am and 4 pm and he wears boots for long hacks at the moment probally once or twice a week he is very relaxed and happy .
I am really happy you have your boy back sound let us know how you get on as you build the work up.

Thank you, not sure yet, see how he does. I used to event him but mainly dressage now. So hopefully some affiliated dressage, and maybe even a bit of eventing! :O

You have no idea how happy I am for you and your horse, fantastic new feet. Well done you,and Oberon of course.

Yey, thanks all :D I am so pleased. Wanted to try and fill others with hope as well, (and confirm all the converts that they were right all along :P ) Not sure it will work for every single horse, but it has defo worked for us.

Well done! That is fantastic news and wow what a change in those feet, gorgeous horse too!! I don't often post but I remember reading your post about first removing the shoes, and my goodness its amazing you have done it in 3 months, so congratulations! Its so lovely to hear you have him sound again!

Took shoes off mare. Didn't hack or jump for a week. Sorted not been footsore once. If she hadn't handled it within 4 weeks the shoes would have gone straight back on as per farrier and vets advice.

Thank you for posting this! I've just taken shoes off my mare who has 'something' going on in her feet - she is footy at the moment but we have our first trim booked on Monday.

Great to read yet another success story :)

Not quite sure of the point of this reply? Are you suggesting I should have put the shoes back on after a month as he struggled? Glad your mare found it so easy though!

:) Best of luck, I hope you do well with her, I'm sure you will :) Keep us posted on your progress x

Yay - great news. I'm at about the same stage as you are at - although I took my hoof boots off for the first time out long-reining today just for 15 mins - not footsore at all! I'm enjoying the progress so much. I hope it continues for you. x

:D Congratulations! He does look really well.

If I remember, our horses ditched their shoes around about the same time except mine decided to injure himself along the way so isn't as far advanced as yours!
