My two aren't rugged and may not be if they keep condition. They are a 16 year old Argentinian Polo Pony and a 2 year old Criollo filly. They both have a lot of condition and good overall coverage and seem happy even in the rain and the wind. They get a hard feed once a day, and will start getting hay when the grass has gone as we still have some left.

The big fat cobs in the paddock next to mine have been rugged for weeks even in the hot weather we had !!!

They have loads of grass and get a cup of balancer twice a day.

Registered new forest with bib clip who is living out with access to plenty of grass and shelter. He is a good doer and is fed a balancer once a day. He is not fat but is in good condition and maintains his weight easily.

He will get rugged when it is colder and even has a HW rug which he wears when there is snow and it is cold enough for all the pipes to get frozen.

Maybe an idea to point out which country you are in and the weather! As someone having an un-rugged horse in the 1 - 2 degrees horizontal rain and gale force winds, may be a bit different to the un-rugged ones in 15-20 degrees placid weather ;)

Its ranging from 0 degrees, with frost and wind chill, horizontal rain and gale force winds here, to 14 in the sunshine. My Friesian is in his rain sheet with M/W on standby if he starts to get cold. out 24/7.

Both mine are forest bred New forest ponies.
I think Merryns mum is still out there. When someone goes out and puts a rug on her he can have one to ;)

Hanoverians, TBs, Holsteiners, Oldenburgs, AQHAs, APHAs, ApHCs, Arabs, Connemaras are the breeds I own. We are having the same temperatures and weather patterns (high winds, rain, sunshine) as you are having in the UK at the moment. None of mine are (or will be) rugged at those temperatures. My guys start getting rugged when the temps get down to around -8c. When winter proper, it goes down to -30c to -40c here.

I have 16 Standardbreds ranging from 4 months to 20 years old, all currently unrugged. The youngest foal is currently stabled 24/7, my riding mare is in at night and the rest are all out 24/7. When the weather gets colder the four that are due to come back into training for next season will be rugged, three will remain out 24/7 and one will be in at night only. The four weanlings will be in at night and out during the day and the rest will remain unrugged and out 24/7 all being well.

New Forest.

At the moment unclipped & un rugged, but will probably end up being rugged later on this winter - in cold, relentless rain he usually goes out in a no fill or lightweight turn out. If very cold at night, he'll wear a fleece/Thermatex rug.

Hopefully rugs are a whole off yet though!

In the South West, where it's still balmy and warm...well 11 to 15 degrees.

Two New Forests, out 24/7, one a newcomer.

My lad will stay unrugged unless we get a lot of rain, as he gets a bit miserable when continually wet. Then he will get a rain sheet.

New girl only arrived yesterday, so we'll play it by ear, but pretty much the same as H unless we see reason to do something different.

Two Icelandics here and I keep looking out and wondering if it is cold and windy enough to take the sweet itch rugs off and let them be naked for a while.

ISH and a TB. Rain sheet only when turned out, but that is more for my benefit so that I don't have to scrape off several inches of mud off their backs before I ride. Both in at night unrugged, although the TB did have a light weight fleece on for a couple of nights when it went below 5 degrees. I spent all summer trying to build up her weight, now she is there I don't want it all falling off her again.

Although she has now been clipped and is wearing a rain sheet if it's raining (Naked if not - being wet makes her cold, she doesn't give two hoots if it's just cold!), I have a Highland :)

Two arabs and a Dartmoor Hill Pony. The Arabs are on holiday at the moment but will be rugged when clipped and working. The DHP is only 2 so won't wear a rug for a few years until she's clipped and working. I'm on the Herts/Beds border and they are all still living out 24/7 for another month or so.

A Warmblood, A Welsh D a Gypsy Cob and two mini shetlands, all in good condition, unrugged at the moment, we're in North Hampshire, its been pretty rainy and windy here and most of the other horses I pass are rugged up. Makes me feel like a bad owner. They get a hard feed a day, will hay when less grass, and are out 24/7. I will start to rug when the temp drops but, even though its been windy/wet, it is still pretty warm here.

Yearling is a WB.

Unrugged so he gets nice and fluffy - may consider throwing a rain sheet on him over the next few weeks if rain keeps on as bad as it was yesterday (felt like a very bad mum!). But for now the sun is shining in the west mids so hopefully he might just get a day to dry out!

ID x , rising 6yo. In the south east, ranging between 14-16c during the day and 7-11c at night.

Stabled and unrugged at night. Rain sheet on during day. It's been VERY wet the last week, yesterday was intermittent thunderstorms.

3 year old wb x filly - very fat, no winter coat yet, unrugged and will stay that way if I can keep my resolve! My mantra everytime it rains is 'it's not cold, she must loose some weight'. 7 year old welsh section a mare, coat like a bear already, also too fat - no rug - ever!!!

Welsh, NF, Dartmoor, Shetland. Hampshire is never as bad as a welsh hillside, and the Shetland just laughs at the worst of our winter. Natural shelter only. Only one rugged is pushing 30 - if I rug him, I don't need to take him away from the others to every day for extra food.

Have previously had a happy unrugged Arab out there, and the local polo yard doesn't rug their OTTB's, who're as hairy as anything by November.
