For those who do a lot of long reining/lining - quick question

I have always just used two lunge lines but want to buy a set of long lines. Those who do lots of long lining, what length lines do you use? I am looking at buying a pair for when I start the youngsters. I like to be able to use them on a circle as well as in straight lines, so which size are best? Or would you get two sets, one for road/track work, the other for two line lungeing? I am looking at some that are 12 foot, some 22 foot and some over 30 foot. Thanks :)
 
I use draw reins, because I happened to have a couple of sets kicking around and they're a good length for my midgets...
 
You really need the longest ones for circle work otherwise you will find they are restrictive when round the whole horse, you may be best getting a shorter set if you plan to do a lot out and about so that you have less to worry about getting tangled up, or tripping over them! I usually use lunge reins as I tend to mix the work up, doing circles then going off for a wander and am too lazy to stop and change kit halfway through.
 
I wouldn't bother - I have a set that I never use as I found them more difficult to handle than 2 lunge lines _ I use different colour lunge lines so I can easily see which is which... and find that separate lines don't get tangled as much
 
I prefer 12ft ones for road work but recently picked up a very good tip - I now use 2 lunge lines for circle work and when I then want to go on the roads I take one off, attach a carabiner to the 'handle' end and attach that to the bit so I'm just using 1 circular long rein - puts me about the same distance as 12ft lines :)
 
I also use driving reins. Mine are nowhere near long enough (pony set), so I usually find myself close enough behind them to pat them on the bum.

Yes, when I have used two lunge lines that is what I do, but I do end up getting a bit tangled!

I was thinking of buying the ones that come in pairs but are still separate. I find my lunge lines a bit long when doing straight work. They have some reasonably priced reins on ebay for under £10 a pair.

Thanks. Yes I bought two matching lungelines last year for long reining in but found them a bit long for straight work. Maybe I will just buy a pair of the 12 feet ones to change over to when I want to go down the track.

I find driving reins way too short for canter/trot work on anything more than a 10m circle. I use lunge lines or if I'm organised enough proper synthetic long reins, with rope a the horse end and flat at human end, these are if anything longer than my standard lunge lines.
eta I use the the 'wrong' way round, tying handles to the bit and clips in my hands- they shake too much and are too heavy and otherwise and disturb the contact.

Get different colours. Its sooo much easier when you have a tangle. I use this stuff - I think mine were 10mm thick and 10M long, they were far too long, I made a couple of lead ropes after I trimmed them. Just add clips and away you go, the rope works much better than flat reins.

and RUN..... :D fab way to get fit as i use a combination of running behind and putting her on a circle :)
 
I made a set with nautical rope. It's pricey stuff so actually not a cheap option but they are EXACTLY the weight, feel and length I want. :) I have a proper pair, with rope and leather but still prefer my custom ones.
