for those who have horses on part/full livery....

Sorry, probably didn't explain that very well. The field groups all go out in the same order, but if anyone particularly wants to keep in to ride or whatever they can. They're all out in groups of between 3 and 5, so one staying in doesn't really cause much disruption. However, it's rare for anyone at my yard to ride that early (morning feeds are at 8am everyday, including weekends- unless you have specifically requested not to). So people tend to feed, turnout so they can get their jobs done and then bring back in if they want to ride or whatever. We find that keeping to such a strict routine really helps. Admittedly, it's not a huge yard, but it works for us

I have my horse on part livery only because i work 13hr shifts. I get to the yard between 4 and 7 days a week and when i am at work i know that my horse is taken care of. Don't ever feel that he is not my horse x

When I bought my pony he was going to be on part livery during the winter and out at grass during the summer.

However from the start he took a dislike to the grooms and staff who found him formidable to handle - they had difficulty catching him and said they could not lead him at the same time as leading another horse as he would kick - whereas I had no problems and had caught him and lead him in with others no problem - then he refused to stable kept jumping out so in the end I moved him on to a yard where he could live out all year and could be on assisted DIY where he has flourished. He prefers being handled by the same person (me) though now he also really likes YO.

I think a lot depends on the yard and the staff and how easy your horse is. If your horse is quirky or sensitive in anyway I would be wary of going on to part livery as staff are often very busy and may not have the patience or skill to deal with them.

I can only go to the yard once a day so he is on assisted grass livery (YO feeds hay in the field in winter etc) and she has feed him his bucket feed occasionally when he needed medicine twice a day for an allergy. She is however very patient and kind - the first time she caught him he planted as he did not know her - she just waited and reassured him and then he eventually moved - if she had smacked him to try to get him going she would have problems with handling him again in future. 2nd time she wanted to catch he was good as gold.

I have also heard of problems at other yards where horses were not getting fed enough (owners turning up at 6.30 and the horse in without any hay left) or fed too much or YM taking over.

A good part livery yard should be able to (within reason) pander to the needs of the individual horse and owner. I also think if you are going to be on part livery it is really important to get a rapport with the people who are going to be caring for your horse.

I am not saying I would never go on part livery as if my pony had to be stabled I would have to have assistance due to my working hours and current YO would be great but I would be very careful in future about who handled my pony as not everyone who works with horses is as good as YO.

I am on a part/full yard. I'm the only 7 day part livery. Our part livery is kinda like assisted DIY though. We get them turned out, rug changed, fed, mucked out, buckets cleaned, and brought in pm. I go and ride/rug change/ make up feeds and nets/ give feed.

Full livery is am done, then horse in, fed, feet picked, rug changed.

Riding can be done at extra cost...

As I am still there everyday, and did all the riding I still felt she was my horse. She knew who i was, the others just turned her out, and brought her in.

When I was 21 I got my first horse (having had ponies as a child at DIY and at home). He was on DIY liver until I changed job and had to work longer hours so I moved yards to put him onto part livery (everything gone except exercise). My job then changed and I had to do a lot of overseas travel so was not at home for days at a time to I moved to another yard and put him on full livery.

Obviously I was very careful to choose yards that would suit both him and me (one for instance would have been perfect except that the yard was locked at 5.30 pm so that was obviously no good for me).

I never felt that he was no longer' my' horse and he still called when I came onto the yard. The yards I went to were small (approx 6 - 8 horses only) and the horses got a lot of individual attention.

At the last (full) livery yard there were two grooms plus YM and one of the girls was so fond of my horse that she would come in on her days off to do him!

Now that I have my own yard I can truly appreciate the benefit of being a livery having lugged out 40 buckets of water from the house every day due to frozen pipes.

I think your a horrible horrible person for putting your horsey on part livery!!!

Jokes!

I've never been on livery but it's a pretty good idea around exams. The only reason I've had any chance with my revision is because of the snow. No college (where I seem to learn very little!) and haven't felt pressured to ride stig which has given me tonnes of time!

When I worked a weekend at a DIY/part and full livery I thought the grooms were really friendly, the yard manager was brilliant and the liveries were all very friendly too each other. It really surprised me because I stereotyped them all as posh people who would be ridiculously snobby but I loved them! They all happily chatted to me about their horses and mine!

DO IT!!! And hopefully it'll be one of those lovely yards! If not you can come and join me and stig!
