do you find keeping them with geldings at close quarters makes them more mareish than just with other mares or on their own?

Had two mares that when kept on own aren't mareish nor has it been obvious when they're in season, but both changed when I've had a gelding at the same time - am I alone in this?!
 
My mare lives out with my gelding 24/7 and maybe i'm just lucky that she is not mareish at all.I think if she threw a strop and my gelding he would go off and sulk for weeks.
 
Makes no difference with my mare :D Shes not marish at all, most of the time i cant even tell when shes in season!! At the old yard she was only out with mares, now shes out with geldings and has a wee window in her stable so she can see the gelding next door and shes completely the same. I must admit, when i didn move i was worried she would turn into a moody flirty mare but thank god shes normal :D
 
Hmmm maybe it is just me! Both mares I've had have been non mareish without the gelding around, but once he was they would pee flirtatiously everywhere, squealing and one of then could be awkward to catch, be around and spooky when never normally any of the above!
 
I have 4 mares, only one of them is mareish,. She is fine to ride and handle. She just gets a bit more vocal and is a complete tart - winking, squirting, lifting her tail when you groom her back end (thanks but no thanks dear). I am sure she is worse now than when she was in a mixed herd, been ladies only for about 3 or 4 years. We were wondering only yesterday if horses have a 'biological clock'. If they do hers must be ticking loudly, she is now 22.
 
My mare is out with geldings and is the boss, marey when due in season, but never had her just with mares so don't know if it would make a difference, but she is managable when in one of her moods so not too much of an issue for me TBH.
 
My gelding used to be 'kept' as a particular mare's 'bf' when they were in a mixed herd and she was in season. She got really possessive of him although the rest of the time they were both friends with others in the herd. She is now out with mares and I'll have a look to see if she adopts a 'gf' when the time comes!
 
I had a problem with the gelding. I had my two mares with him and in the beginning he was soppy joe and my little mare was in charge. A year later he is top dog and throwing his weight around! The one poor mare has marks all over her and its her that is all flirty with him. The other mare who is mareish anyway all the time is not bothered. Just moved to a yard where geldings and mares are separated. The old boy is not amused!! My mares are really happy I think to be just the girls together again :)

Yay, I'm not the only one! Though mine was fine when I had a gelding, albeit she was boss, despite the size difference and is good with other horses in general, but for handling and riding she wasn't awful, but definitely different and difficult!
 
My donkey gelding lives with 4 mares they get on fine but he is bottom of the pecking order! they play with him and love him........he thinks he is a girl!
 
My mare is a brazen hussy and if there aren't any geldings around when she's in season she'll find the "manliest" mare and flirt with her instead :p. She's MUCH more settled in a mixed herd in general though and her best mate at the moment is a gelding of about her age (18). They're the grumpy old couple who stand and moan about all the youngsters :D

Damn it, maybe that's the trick. Good looking bloke over the fence who's actually got the 'goods' - well you don't want to appear a moody, easy tart in order you might strike it lucky with him? Now I understand! :cool:
 
Have 3 mares and 3 geldings at the moment and none of the mares are particularly mare-ish, although one of the geldings tends to swap girlfriends at the flick of a tail ;)!
 
My mare's surrounded by geldings and she takes no notice of them, or them of her. She's so un-mareish that I often think if I wanted to breed, AI would be the only option!
 
Both of our mares fancy our new young WB gelding. The one mare is a just a total flirty tart and squeals and nickers at him constantly accross the fence, particularly of he so much as casts an eye in her direction. She won't let my mare near the fenceline and when she was being trimmed the other week she went ballistic that my mare 'got close to her BF' in her absence. It is rather laughable, but I reckon the gelding must feel rather uncomfortable. It has been like this for the 6 months we have owned him.
 
I have had my very maresh mare out in a mare only herd for the last 4 years, she is very maresh so much so i have her on Oestress and she has been seen to mount other mares (have had her checked by the vet no cysts/tumours etc).

I have just moved yards and she is turned out with my gelding on their own, i thought we would have real problems, but surprisingly they have been fine. I will have to give it more time and see what she's like when she comes into season, but i think that by seperating them it can cause more mareish problems (if you know what i mean).

My 15.1hh dainty mare is also most definatly in charge of my 16.2hh tall x 16.2hh wide gelding lol.
 
I haven't noticed any of the (4 :eek:) mares I have had be mareish around a gelding and they have all be turned out with my cob.Only one was a baggage but that was just her.

Apparently my new mare had a season and I completely missed it - I had absolutely no idea!
 
My mare is just about the least mareish mare i have ever met. She rarely comes into season, or if she does we don't notice. She has a few BFs around the yard and generally gets on with all other horses, geldings or mares. She is currently out with my gelding and seems *touch wood* to being okay, he is the problem not her. He generally hates other horses. He does not seem to be bringing her into season, which is good as I think it would terrify him! :p:D
