do you still tie up to one side as if there was a partition so they can just move bum around or do you cross tie to both sides so they can move both front and back end? sorry if this is a stoopid question!
One of my boys will only travel without the partition. In one sense its useful cos you can tack up in there on rainy days, but the downside is that i cant ever take two, hence why i am now looking for a small lorry.
A lot of people actually find horses travel better without the partition, and they are more balanced. I've known horses who are AWFUL travellers but when the partition is taken out they becomne calm and relaxed. But it can depend on the individual horse like everything.
i was just wondering because my friends lorry that I am borrowing the partition only ends about a foot from the floor so theres no way bella can spread her feet which personally i think is really bad but anyhow i was going to remove the partition, put 2 haynets up on each side and then she can stand how she feels comfortable. thanks for comments guys.
I used to travel just normally - ie. tied to the right side in a trailer (with a breast bar). I guess in a lorry then you would need to cross tie as there's more room for them to try and turn round etc.
In a lorry, where there is room for the horse to turn around without getting stuck, there shouldn't be a problem travelling untied. The horse would position himself where he feels most secure.
Thanks for this, its really useful information. I've thought about taking out my partition, but I wondered if a big horse moving around would make things more unstable in the back of a small wagon
If he falls over (due to not being able to lean on the partition when cornering) he could damage his neck if he was tied up, crossed or single rope. Mare with foals are travelled loose, why not a single horse?
We added a straight bar to our trailer so the horse had something to lean on, I wouldn't travel without a breast bar of any sort, as when you brake they can't balance except by their own neck and head tied up.
It wasn't difficult to do, just drill holes and make the things that hold the bar removable with pins so you can revert back to your normal partition when necessary.
We used to travel three ponies sideways and nothing ever travelled badly.
We travelled brood mres with just a bar in the front and tied normally, as they tend to move to a herringbone position of their own accord.
I own 3.5 ton lorry ( its an alloy lambourne container on a ford transit ) its a rear load frount unload meant to be 2 horse but i only ever take my large horse in it as it had the partionion taken out as she refused to load.
She travels forward facing cross tied but tied slightly tighter to the right hand side and long on the left so she can eat her haynet.
She travels stood on the diagonal with her head by the haynet and put her bum in the opposite corner. My dad made me a full lenght breast bar and its works really well for me.
