I only dampen when I lay the bed. TBH I'm not sure it makes much difference apart from helping it to settle rather than scatter around too much. I chuck extra bales in dry and within a day they are amalgamated into the rest
IMO,aubiose is definitely better. Tried hemcore as an alternative (when aubiose went to over £11 per bag from our supplier) & didn't rate it. Now on Bliss basic, which we find more like aubiose than hemcore is and the Bliss is £6.40 a bag. If money no object, would maybe mix aubiose and bliss but don't think aubiose is twice as good as bliss(tho it's nearly twice the price:-/ )
I have found it the best thing for my bed trasher (shes not stressy just manages to demolish a bed) and I think the reason it works for her is that it is heavy and cant be dragged around or all mushed in together so easily and even when it does the bed seems to dry out the poo so i just fork it all up round the banks and remove. It doesnt seem to suck up the moisture of the atmosphere either, when she was on shavings and we have wet, miserable days it seems to all feel damp.
pistolpete what is comfybed? Aubiose is hemp. Its more absorbent than chippings and you skip out daily, only digging out the wet when it comes to the top, disturbing the bed as little as possible just filling in the hole with fresh bedding. It packs down so poo stays on top and mucking out takes less time, effort and expense than chippings. Hope that helps.
Aubiose def better than Hemcore, it always seems a lot more absorbant and also looks cleaner so you can see the dirty bits. I wanted to like Hemcore as its UK made whereas Aubiose is French but I cant!
Def no need to dampen apart from initial laying of bed.
Sooo lovely and very excellent for messy horses esp big ones, my big chap loves it and I use a lot less bedding so it costs me less than shavings did despite the price per bag (NB you can also and I do mix it with wood pellets at ratio of 1 aubiose to 3 or 4 wood pellets to save ££).
