Is it normal for the battery light to remain on until I pull away?

Also, not battery related, but on the speedometer there are two lights at the bottom. One of the left (at 0kph bit), and one on the right. I assume the one on the right is a speed warning as comes on when I go over 50mph, however the one on the right flashes when I am stationery. Any idea what its for?

Old lorry - love it, but its quirky :D

Thanks in advance :)

No your battery light should not stay one. It should not stay one once the engine is running either. It usually means that it isn't charging properly (I think).

This ^

My car has a habit of turning warning lights on (currently has two on) so just assumed it was a glitch when it happened. A couple of days later I was pootling along to work and the car just died. It had lurched a couple of times like it was on it's way to stalling and then just fizzled out. I had my alternator refurbed for £50 and can't believe the difference it's made on little things I hadn't noticed weren't working as well as should be.

Mine wasn't on all the time and was where the brushes weren't building up proper charge so was charging some of the time.

1. Battery light should go out when the throttle is increased, may return when engine is idle.
2. May be that there is no disc in the tacho?

I have a 1991 813 - mine is the same, the battery light stays on until the revs are a bit higher (ie: you pull away) at which point the engine/alternator can begin charging the battery. If the revs are too low (ie: idle) they are not enough to charge, hence the light being on.

Sounds like its all working fine to me. FWIW, I recently bought a solar panel trickle charger - its stuck in the cab window and plugged into the ciggy charger (isolator needs to be off) and this keeps it topped up nicely between runs.

Thanks Porkpie - that makes sense now. Just started lorry with foot flat on accelarater and light went off as soon as revs hit around 1400, and stayed off :)

I have an isolator and also use a solar trickle charge on the battery - only slightly paranoid :D

The two red lights relate to the taco, which I am guessing you don't use if its a private lorry, mine is the same, I have learnt to just ignore them

Hi,

My Hubby is a Ford Cargo expert and ive just put your questions to him.

The light thats flashing is telling you that you have no tacho in the tacho head.

The one that comes on is just telling you that you have gone over 50mph.

The battery light will go out when you rev it up slightly on start up.

If ive missed anything please let me know or if you want me to ask him anything else :)
