Ford Cargo opinions please!

Hi, Haven't read rest of post so sorry if repeating - my mechanic hubby tells me they're made of 'unobtanium' and you cannot get parts any longer so not to touch them with a bargepole! Sorry if this upsets a few peeps - hope you know different if you know what I mean...

I think this relates to the Ford Cargo rather than the Iveco Eurocargo. Not a problem getting parts for that. My Dad is a mechanic and won't let anything BUT a cargo into his yard ;). He is in the process of putting a Eurocargo under my box, having taken out an A reg Cargo 0811. Interestingly the reason we were swapping it was (yes you guessed it) rust. But it has sat about totally unused for at least 5 years. And as an aside, he charged the battery up, and it fired straight away :) I did have the breaks seize a bit if it sat too long, but in all the years I had it, it never let me down mechanically. And neither did the D-Series that was under it before, so I hope the Trusty Ford will continue with the new one :)

However, I'll tell him to start selling the Cargo for spare parts; we can clearly command premium prices due to the apparent impossibility to find parts any more!

As most have said they are great but the cabs can rust through!

Parts are now as scarce as bedford parts but you can find them usually 2nd hand though.

As for mercs - yep those parts are blindlingly expensive! Had a gorgeous merc 814 but the blessed costs of parts even for simple things were 3 times the cost of normal parts!

But like any wagon it depends upon how you use it and store it! Lots of hammerite underneath can prevent the rust eating the wagon and chassis.

This is what I find so confusing. Some people say that Mercs are reasonably priced and others say that they are way over priced ! Confused dot com.!

My mechanic said the older mercs are bullet proof, dont rust as much as the daf/iveco. Its a minefield. I went out definately NOT BUYING an older Iveco, didnt look at a single one but seen lots of Dafs. Mans, even Renault. I seen lots of rust buckets, holes in the cab floors, mushrooms growing underneath the horse area floor, sides dissintigrating, travelled miles and had 2 wagons sold as I stood there waiting to view (who says they arent selling!) which led me to the one Ive just bought. And its an Iveco :eek::eek: It was recommended to me, I wouldnt have give it a 2nd look otherwise but I love it. It has everything I wanted and more and turned out to be less than my budget. I hope thats a good omen :D
I was always told MANs were great but Ive since learnt they may be good but parts are expensive if they go wrong.
All I can say is check for rust, get it mechanically checked over and if you like it then buy it. I was looking for months and probably would still be looking.
Good Luck

I think you will find its alot down to people's brand loyalty, personal experance of one example of a make, and sometimes ignorance!!!, all have good and bad points, it's best to be open minded and buy what suits your job and your pocket ..
