Im looking in to trading my car in for a 4x4. I just rang a bloke and he's got a Ford Maverick that he's picking up later that he'll only want £700 for. Apparently its the old owners pride and joy.
He's phoning me back later once he's picked it up,
Are they any good? I dont want to go and look at it if it will be a waste of time lol!
Do they tow OK?

I had one a couple of years ago. Best car I have ever had, loved it, easy to drive, v comfy. Will definately get one again when funds allow.

eta: make sure it is the long wheel base version before you go to look, the swb is neither use nor ornament!
 
I used to have one, it towed surprisingly well and was easy enough to drive. Reliability was crap though, engine completely went when it was only 8 years old with 100K on clock.
TBH if I was looking for an old 4x4 I wouldn't touch a Maverick, you'd be better of with a Mitsibushi, Toyota or similar
 
Ive just been looking at reviews for them on google and its not that great! I want a shogun prefferably

I've had and currently have Nissan Terrano's which seem to be pretty much identical - I've had SWB and currently had LWB.

They are brilliant at towing - I regulary tow a 510 with 2 horses and mine have been very reliable although I've never had one more than about 6 yrs old. Haven't noticed any difference between the SWB and LWB other than the extra doors! They also cope very well with the steep Devon hills.

They are also easy to drive and park when not towing, which is what attracted me to them as I have to use it for work too.
 
Dunno - never looked under the bonnet & I suppose I get rid of them before they reach 100,000 miles. It sounds ok to me & I bet the Shogun's engines not too cheap either. Shogun are also incredibly thirsty and have a tiny boot - they do look pretty though !
 
My friend let me drive her LWB Pajero on Fri, its an auto, it was really weird having no clutch but i liked being lazy lol! She said i can buy it off her for £1100, but my OH is so bloody fussy. Ive got to sell my car 1st so im thinking that maybe she would let me sell mine give her that cash and use hers whilst I get the last couple hundred quid together.
Hers isn't too bad on MPG, I think it does about 38-40, she put £20 in on Fri morning, and done 2 trailer trips plus loads of running round and its still got some in it.

Our old 1995 Maverick was recalled in 1999 to have it's brake pipes changed as there was evidence of them "pitting" and corroding prematurely. Is this the recall you mention? If so, it should've already been done by now.

We've had three Mavericks/Terranos in total...the latest being a 2005 "55" plate. Love them. Nice to drive and tow like a dream.

Out of interest, why do you say the SWB is neither use nor ornament? I've now had 2 LWB (although one is a Terrano, not a Maverick) and we also have a SWB Terrano too. I prefer the LWB as I like the extra space, but they both tow the exact same weight and I have towed the horse trailer with both the LWB and SWB and had no problems.

I was just about to reply along the same lines. I personally drive a manual as we're too "stuck in the mud" to go down the auto route, but every review I read suggests modern day automatic transmissions are far superior and more efficient on fuel as well as engine and gearbox wear.

One person says the engine was dodgy....doesn't mean they all are.

My father in law's 1995 SWB Terrano (same as the Maverick as Nissan made the Maverick for Ford) has 138k on the clock. Still has the original gearbox and the engine has not had any work done on it, apart from routine servicing.

Our old LWB Maverick was the same age as the father in law's and had just clocked it when the lay shaft (sp) in the gearbox started to go. The car was noisy in 1st - 3rd and 5th gear. 4th was quiet as that's a direct gear. Both cars were serviced at the same times and driven in the same manner. Neither had any engine issues ever.

It's just how it goes with some cars. I guess it depends on how well treated they were in their previous lives, in terms of how they were driven not just how they were maintained.
 
We've just traded in our P reg LWB and were sad to see it go. We've had it four years and not once has it not started or have we had to replace anything that wouldn't be classed as wear and tear. Trailer had to be sacrificed for vets bills so wasn't worth keeping due to the running costs.

Me neither for similar reasons, in my case the gear box went everytime I towed off road (3 times in 2 years ) and the same happened to my friends terrano.
Anything with a mitsibushi, toyota, or isuzu badge will cost more but for a reason and in the long run will reep dividens in saved repair bills!

I learnt my lesson and for the past 8 years have had a reliable toyota, gear box still the original.
 
i have a Shogun, Sophie but mine is LWB and a 3.5 V6 Auto.....it would pull a house down!!

Looks in good nick, and diesel so long engine life.

I would be suspicious of the fact that the mot runs out next month, just incase there is something they know needs doing before the car passes, however just a suspicion maybe unjust.

not sure about the value have you cheaked on completed listings to give you an idea of its worth however accourding to http://www.whatcar.com/valuation-summary...1&ML=124000 a bargain.

I have the 2.8 Turbo diesel LWB Auto Pajero - fantastic for towing but I very much doubt you would get 38-40 mpg. Automatics are far better for towing.

When we bought ours we looked at Nissan Terranos - exact same car as Maverick, just a different badge. Was told the worse thing about them is the gearbox, it isn't man enough for the size of car - it is one of the smaller cars gearboxes.

Look at Isuzu Troopers too, another good one for towing and normally a bit cheaper that the Shogun/Pajero
