I have recently bought a horse from a dealer in the UK, the horse was imported from Holland by the dealer, the horse has a KWPN Passport. I am unsure as to whether this Passport is valid in the uk, or if I have to do anything else.
Has anyone else had a similar situation and knows the answer?

they are valid... you need to get hold of the breed society in this country to get it changed into your name

Yes, it is fully valid :-). However, you do need to update it so that the horse is in your name. DEFRA has recently decided that any studbook PIO registering/overstamping the passports of this kind of horse can do this so I sugest that you contact either SHBGB, the BWBS or the AES and fidn out how much they charge to do this. HTH

BTW, how is your horse bred?

Yes the passport is valid in the UK although as Ciss says you need to transfer ownership.

It is quite straightforward to update your ownership details with the KWPN. Alongwith the passport, you should have also received an A4 registration paper showing all the horse's registration details and pedigree. This paper is often folded up and tucked in the pocket in the back of the passport.

You don't need to send the actual passport to the KWPN - that stays with you. You do need to send the registration paper, plus some colour photos of the horse showing each side and the front (so the KWPN can see the markings) and tell them the name and address of the new owner. I think current cost to transfer ownership is €21.20. You can either pay over phone by credit card or send them a cheque for the £ equivalent. The KWPN will print off a new registration paper with your new ownership deatils on the back and they will send you a sticky label to put in the ownership pages of the passport.

I would give their helpdesk a ring just to confirm - no is 0031 351 255555. NB make sure you send it to the right address as the KWPN moved offices in 2006 so the address in the passport might be old!

thankyou wisnette, I am perhaps being a little dim here, but by changing ownership details with KWPN, do I still have to have the passport overstamped by one of the UK organisations e.g. SHBGB? I would guess so but getting confused!!

No. If you update the ownership details with the KWPN, they will update your horse's paperwork and their own records and that is all that is required. You don't need to have the passport overstamped or anything by any UK society.

Personally I have updated all my KWPN horses ownership details direct with the KWPN - it just seems more sensible rather than involving any 3rd parties.
