My mares forelock doesnt grow! It is just fluffy and there is no coarse hair. The rest of her mane grows well. I am now unable to plait it, so can look a bit silly in dressage!! She has only been plaited once in last year so its not due to over plaiting or rubbing.
Any suggestions, other than fake plaits, as to what I could do/try to aid growth? Sorry hair extensions are definitely out of the question!!
My old pony was like that! He just had a wee tuft for a forelock. The only way I could make it resemble a plait was to a 'french' plait type thing and then put a band round it. It did look rather silly though!
Thanx. I actually do that, starting from behind the ears and still end up with nothing to put a band round!! Thread is a complete non-starter as there really is nothing to sew!!!!!
I've had two like this, one I still have. Her 'forelock' is so pityful I no longer even dignify it with being called a forelock!
I'm wanting to do some dressagey stuf with her (if she ever comes sound
) so will then have to deal with the plaiting malarkey. Up until now I havn't had to do it!
Ok BBB- how do I do that? I can use her tail hair or even mane hair if necessary, unfortunately she's the only chestnut I have and I don't fancy sneaking round someone's field at night stealing a forelock!!! . "Chestnut mare" could be the problem!!
Get a nice long bit.
put a band around the middle and fold the hair in half.
Plait the hair using a third from each end to make the third strand of the plait.
Then finish the plait and trim off the straggly bits.
Ball it up.
Sew it so it doesnt fall apart.
The middle part you put the band through should leave a loop to attatch the plait to the headpiece of your bridle, you need to make the plait long enough to sit far enough down the face of your horse!
I think that probably sounds more complicated than it is!?
