Forget the horses, how are you looking after after yourself in the cold?

I am in my element in this weather, possibly because I am well insulated by fat like a seal!! Hope it burns some calories! Once I get to horsey's field I'm warmed up and prizing frozen poo off the ground, stripping down to just a hoodie, however my lips are so dry and there was a bitter wind today so I'm going to get the deer trapper hat out and do the flaps up over my cheeks! My face is so cold!

I love old people, I am not sure how to identify where they live though? There is nothing I would like more than to sit and watch bargain hunt with an old person today...

Crikey, I must be a right wimp!

I work outside so this is what I have been wearing the last few days!!

Thermal base layer
Lined hiking trousers
Waterproof trousers
Massively thick socks
Boots with separate inners
3pairs of gloves
Thermal top
The shirt
3 fleeces
Bodywarmer
Scarf
Hat
And the last 2 days I have stuffed a small hot water bottle down the back of my trousers!

I got some ariat power tights in a sale and they are awesome. otherwise tescos thermals under jeans or breeches under chaps. on the yard/fields I wear some safety rigger boots which are fleece lined, safety hi viz jacket, fleece hat (I hate hats but can't bear to wear head torch without one), buff. for gloves I just have 3/4 pairs of cheap fleece gloves from asda. I run quite hot and don't tend to ever feel cold when working outside.

My friend gave me some Waitrose Baby Butter, its amazing!!! I lather it on my face in the day time at the yard, then when i go to bed i put it on my feet and hands!! Soft as a babies bum !!! Its mostly Olive oil based its great!

however my lips are so dry

Try Blistex Intensive Moisturiser for your lips, it is a cream in a tube rather than a stick of balm and is so much better than any other lip balm I have tried. In my opinion so many (vaseline included) make your lips more dry in the long term. The only lip balm I would use is the palmers cocoa butter one, that seems to work well.

For hands i've recently started using the bodyshop hemp cream and that is very good. Easier to put on than the neutrogena norweigian fisherman formula but probably just as efective.

Neoprene chaps, waterproof socks and latex gloves under my normal gloves.

And a Vaseline Intensive care lip balm which I use on my face and hands as well as my lips.

Yaktrax on my boots, and spray-on tyre chain on my car.

Warm, soft and safe...

Thank you I will try that! I don't like the Vaseline type ones either I find them more drying. I like all the burts bees things and love palmers cocoa butter... I like smelling like chocolate :-)

For split fingers - track down some Lotil cream. Not in all chemists, but it absolutely brilliant and heals the splits up really quickly.

Can anyone recommend some gloves that you can actually do stuff in. I always have to take them off to do rugs, headcollars, hay etc so pointless wearing the damn things!! I need a thin but warm pair I think that can stay on but still allow me to feel what Im doing. Any ideas?

Try silk glove liners under your normal gloves. You can then take your normal gloves off for fiddly tasks and leave the glove liners on as they are thin and tight fitting. I can even operate a touch screen phone in mine. If you found you needed to take the outer gloves off a lot you could try a pair of those mittens that convert to fingerless gloves so that all you have to do is fold back the mitten part and you don't risk losing a glove. Something like these

I second this - best stuff ever. I was on medication a few years back that gave me ridiculously dry lips and the specialist nurse recommended it as being the only stuff that would help, and she was right :) It's awesome.

Heating turned up to 30 deg when I get in :)))

Lots of tea and as I work with horses I'm out in it all day, I do waters first thing and fill enough to last the whole day and then I change as I always get soaked!
Lots of cocoa butter!

Amen to that! My lips go from sore, dry and chapped to normal in 24 hours with this stuff!

Been out all day with Kids and horses, skinnies, waterproof trousers, long sleeve Primarni top, Joules fleece, Raging Bull coat (amazing thing can cope all day in heavy rain and now I see snow- still snug and dry), Grassmeres and a wide brim wax hat (i wear glasses so snow is a problem)- only got cold hands when my gloves finally got wet. :D

That's taking it to a whole new level!!!! No wonder I'm always cold, I'm not wearing enough! ;)

@ghostie, I found out about it because my mum was told about it by a nurse while in hospital and chapped lips were a side effect of treatment. It is fab stuff, lasts forever too as you only need to put it on once a day.

I also work outside full time (own yard work solo)

I never think of me anymore, horses come first , myself goes on the back burner.

I wear

T shirt
jumper
thin jacket
jeans
1 pair of thin socks
gloves
hat

Don't need to wear anymore no body warmers since the Cancer my body over heats if I do .

For split hands, chapped skin and lips I always use snowfire www.auravita.com/product/Snowfire-O...ange if they get wet. The whole lot cost £25!

Best hand cream ever, is nivea soft. It's instantly absorbed and not at all tacky. In the morning I always put on day cream and the body shop minerals foundation as it's spf 25. I do this every day, whatever the weather, and have no lines at all. I also put my face cream on the backs of my hands at the same time.

I wear a base layer of technical material (long sleeved vest and tights). I wear dublin jods as I find them the most comfortable to wear in and out of the house. In this weather I wear a double sided furry fleece - can't beat them for warmth. Thick thermal socks and am on my fifth pair of just toggs alberta boots. They are steel toe capped but very light, comfortable and waterproof. Finally, I wouldn't be without my sealskinz winter riding gloves and fake fur lined hat.

I like coats that are lightweight, but long (thigh or knee length).

I wear my padded ski jacket over a body warmer and long sleeved thermal top, jeans with thermal leggings under, sports socks, under toasty warm ski boots. Not ridden for a few days now. Tracks from the field are too icy to bring ponio back up to the yard 15 minutes walk so i've been taking Boyo extra feeds.

As for gloves - have a great pair of fleece riding gloves which are water repellant. For undoing rugs i put on my summer gloves and wear latex ones over the top for extra grip.

Chapped and split hands treated each night with Snowfire.

X

I added a shemagh to my yard clothes yesterday :D.

I'm able to ignore the other liveries either laughing at me/calling me a terrorist  or Obi looking at me like I was an alien  as I was nice and sheltered from the cold wind ;)
