Forget the trivial " my horsey can jump" threads on here..

Posting mainly to give this a bump, but cynical side of me thinks the racing industry will pressurise some action. Hoping.

Well to be frank the quarantine laws need to be tightened. And as for the compensation why should we be pushing for more? Do we get compensation for losing a horse to colic/strangles/laminitis etc? No.

Is the compensation because this is a disease that should be kept out of the country, and would be if the laws were tight enough? Colic, etc., do not come under that heading.

So what precautions can we, the 'normal' horse owner take?

Don't buy "cheap" imported horses...

Seriously though - because its a blood transmission disease - i.e insect bites / dirty needles - it's harder to transmit than airborne or contact spread diseases (i.e Foot & Mouth).
But at the same time, it's more difficult to knowingly prevent transmission because of flies being a carrier - and we all know how hard they are to keep away from horses. Obviously the dirty needles / cross contamination between horses is something we can prevent though.

Hope that makes sense!

You possibly do if your horse is insured. If they have this your insurance will not cover it.

To be quite frank with you, I do my damndest to make sure my horses are covered by vaccines to keep them safe and healthy. £1 for someone ELSE'S mistake.....namely DEFRA for allowing the tripartate to be so flipping flawed??
These days, you could stick a flyrug and a headcollar on an elephant, and as long as it comes in via the backdoor in France, we will let it in!

The difference is that if a horse contracts EIA then it faces COMPULSORY euthanasia BY LAW. If your horse has colic/strangles/laminitis or whatever, then it is up to the owner to decide whether to continue treatment or opt for euthanasia.

THIS.

I've just listened to the broadcast on the 5-Live website, a couple of times they mention owners taking precautions and responsibilities but they don't really say what it is we can do, other than avoid horses that come from Romania.

What each and every one of us can do is avoid the dealers known to import bargain bucket horses and ponies, and make a song and dance about the loopholes in the tripartate.
This isn't the first time this has been posted, yet it amazes me everytime, the amount of people who are not even sure what the tripartate is!
EIA is a HUGE risk to the uk, yet DEFRA seem unwilling/unable to sort the loopholes out that allow people to flaut the law so easily.

The horses found positive in UK this year I do not think came in under tripartite but were only picked up because of irregularities in paperwork--apart from the Devon horse which had been in UK 2 years.

France is doing retrospective testing of horses traced back to Rumania
If UK ie DEFRA also do this in light of the Devon outbreak how many horses will they find positive? How many innocent owners will be very upset?

This programme highlights the ease with which dealers import cheap horses of unknown origin into this country. The interviewer has a good grasp of the problem

Attendees at Exeter sales have been aware of these imports for some time, DEFRA and Trading Stds informed but it continues, halted for a while only when a certain trader was under quarantine

and that "certain" trader is still peddling the same old, same old....

And will continue to no doubt, until people realise that just because it's foreign doesn't mean it's better.... (usually means pig ignorant with no manners in my experience but each to their own) there are plenty of British bred horses being ignored while the foreign rubbish is peddled over here.
