Soooooo my gorgeous ginger mare (17.1) has recently been having some time off due to various issues (nothing physical), mostly mine, and has come back into work last week.
Now when I say some time off I mean about three weeks so not a super long holiday, but I really forgot how much I hate riding her when she is coming back into work!
Now please don't misunderstand she isn't dangerous and the worst she will do is throw in a little buck here or a mini rear there, but she just becomes soooooooo opinionated and argumentative! I understand that it is my own fault for getting a strong minded mare, which usually I love about her but when everything is a fight it just takes the fun out of riding, I know after a few weeks of being back in her routine I will get my partner back but at the moment I find it very hard to motivate myself to get back in the saddle everyday when I know its going to be a fight.
Tips for motivating me and does anyone else have this issue??

My horse can also be very opinionated and stubborn, usually when schooling but he loves hacking so that's what we do if he's getting difficult to ride so maybe try something different; go hacking or try some trec obstacles (very good for getting them to think but without any pressure), maybe lunge her before riding with lots of transitions to get her thinking more forward without you on board; polework can also make things a bit more interesting for you both. You'll get your mojo back; its a miserable time of year for all sorts of reasons!

I have one like this. Can never relax and just enjoy her ... My motivation is that she is very talented and very clever and I need to accept her behaviours as her form of expression  . With enough work she settles, and every now and then we have the WOW moment that makes everything worth it ...

But I still prefer the easy life of riding my other horses ...

I have one gelding that could easily be a mare he can have a proper strop at times and I struggle with him at times, he is very clever and won't put up with mistakes everything has to be asked for exactly right with schooling, he is not a naturally forward horse out hacking lacks confidence and is just generally tiresome sometimes, my other gelding is a dream to school and hack he just has a come on then where we going attitude and is happy to just accept my sloppy excuses of riding aids and just offers me something bless him.

so I feel your pain and I don't even have a mare!
