I've been told that diluted formaldehyde can be used as a hoof hardener

I think you are probably right, although as its a carcinogenic substance (cancer causing) I would suggest it probably isnt a very good idea....

Not sure if its readily available either ?????

it was used to be used to kill thrush...i remeber using it years ago...used to get it from the chemist...in all honestly you are probaly better off using something like keratex...exensive but safer...

Yes it is true on both accounts...carcinogenic and will harden the hoof. In the old days

we used it to treat thrush and boy does it work

but you have to use gloves and do not inhale it

As Box of Frogs always says ... would you use it on yourself?

Funny you should say that ... my grandmother uses it to harden her nails and a couple of years ago I had my hair straightened by a process (that seems to work for everyone else) using formaldehyde. It was extremely unpleasant and I spent a large part of the time with streaming eyes and my face buried in a towel.

I managed to get some at the chemists in the UK a few years ago. Horrid stuff. I spilt it in a bin and took a sniff to see what it was.... I thought my brain would explode!!!!
