How long would a bag of formula 4 feet 20kg bag last a tb on maintenance. My horse is on hoof supplement but was thinking of changing to see if it would produce faster hoof growth he has been on the same supplement for 2 years. The other option was using top spec balancer as this is supposed to have added supplements for hoof maintenance. His hoof growth is slow but the quality is much improved.Any thoughts welcome

My Wishy has had pretty bad feet. Before I got him they were as long as hell and crack pretty bad in summer. I've had him on Pro Feet (NAF) all winter and they have improved slightly. My friend also recommended something called Farriers Formula, I don't know if thats the same as what your using now but, it's supposed to be fab!

I use a product called robust hoof from a company called nutritional scientic products www.horsesupplementsdirect.co .uk It has really helped and is cost effective £27 for 3 months supply but he could do with more growth and wondered if a change might help. The prices are ok but dont tell you how long you would expect a bag to last for formula 4 feet or farriers formula.

I priced this up this week as I had fed farriers formula and the farrier suggested Formula 4 feet (rummages to find the piece of paper!!!!)
F4F comes in 7kg tub@£34.99 (on website)
FF comes in 5kg bag at £25.50
each requires a 170g dose for a 450kg horse/pony
therefore F4F will last for 41 days at 85p per day
Farriers formula will last for 29 days at 86p per day
not much in it really but I did get a better deal buying F4F through my vet as he give 10% discount for cash and doesn't stock Farriers Formula.
Don't know how much your horse weighs but the feed rate is 0.378g/kg therefore 700kg horse requires 0.378x700 = 265g per day.
you need to get a tub to start off with to get the measure or it's load of hassle weighing it out every night and if they don't like it you will be stuck with a big bag although the F4F is very appley tasting and yummy mine eat it out of your hand but they wouldn't with the FF.

I bet your all thinking "how sad is she" but I'm married to a farmer and its starting to rub off on me!!

Thanks for that not sure what to do yet might have a go at top spec or f4f.You can get a 20kg bag f4f on ebay for £77 which will work out alot cheaper. My horse is a tb and weighs 500 .I thought the 170 for his weight could be reduced by half for maintenance

have you looked on the F4F website? I don't think there is a reduction for maintenance I think you just feed the correct amount continuously. The farrier did say to me that unless you feed the full amount you may as well feed your pound notes but I was going to check with the vets when I order a new sack whether you do reduce. I know on the farriers formula you can reduce to maintenance but after twelve months.
