I clearly have no forum clout!

I would like to know how i get some??

Do i have to turn into a troll and be rude to everyone to be remembered??

The reason i ask is that i had lots of pms about my horse being injured and to update them when i knew more - so i have done an update.

30 views and not one reply

Did i not use the magic word VIBES??

LOL

What is clout? Never heard of it lol.
I was wondering how come people are recognised and others aren't. I was also wondering how come there seems to be a sort of 'incrowd' when people don't know each other lol.
I haven't read many posts on here today, so haven't seen your post yet, but when I find it I'll read it

No, VK, you're just never involved in any of the over-sensationalised bust ups that happen on here, sitting on one side or the other!

I haven't read your update, and I suspect those who PM'd you may not all have read it, yet. A lot of new people here as well. I will, however, go and read it, now.

Cavornia has clout according to Ainsley Harriot. 'Cough medicine WITH CLOUT', but 'forum member WITH CLOUT' instead.

Lots of people have met off the forum so appear to know each other better on here. Others have used the forum a long time; some haven't and their face just seems to fit. I try to help people on here wherever I can, but maintain a certain air of suspicion as well.

I think you also have to consider when people are using the forum, you will get groups that use it more in the day during the week, like people that are on it at work when they are not supposed to be *cough cough* , those that just log in during an evening, and no doubt some just on a weekend, or not at all on a weekend because there busy riding and competing etc, so in fairness posts can be easily missed yet viewed a lot by unregistered users. Sometimes I miss really important posts and think ooow gosh I hope they didn't think I was ignorant in not responding...purely because I never read the post as I was not on line...lol we'd all have to be on here 24/7 to make sure we viewed and replied to everyone that we wanted to but its just not possible.

I wouldn't take it personally, hope you horse is doing ok now
smile.gif

No, I don't think it's that you're invisable just that people come on here at different times & with the speed with which posts are entered it's easy to miss something!
For instance a while back you asked for best wormer sites - I missed your original post but started a new thread with your user name as the title to suggest the site I use a day or so after your orginal thread - you didn't respond to that and I'm assuming it's cos you missed it not because I have no forum clout (altho I don't!)

It isnt just about my horse digger123.

Ive just got to the point where i just search the internet for the answers i may need as i dont seem to get much response from anything i post on here even if im asking for advice on anything.

Its just annoying when i post something and get like 2 responses then a more popular user posts something similar 2 days later and gets 2 pages of replies!

still at least i can steal there advice then!

V_K - brave of you to mention what a lot of people are thinking, I have spoken to a couple of local users who feel the same way as I once had 140 views on my Horse but not one reply. However many regular users have since been fantastic helping out with his PSD and offering for me to PM them etc, even those that could not help with the symptoms wished him all the best. . I think the above users are right it does relate to what time of day you post and if like me you do not post at a set time, them some people do rightly treat your post with caution. I hope you feel better from the posts above it certainly is not anything personal - hopefully everyone reading it will take heart too if they felt the same as you. I hope your horse is ok.

You need Cavonia for that cough I hear it has more clout than I do

I do know exactly what you mean. There does seem to be a trend where the more 'popular' memebers, even there posts seem to have more views than others let alone more replies. It can be very fustrating when you are desperatly in need of advice, but I doubt the forum will ever change in this respect!

We'll just have to stick together!!

I think a lot of people look at the amount of replies and think...ooow that must be an interesting subject or eh up is this a heated discussion where people what to put there 10p worth in, so I again I wouldn't judge on the number of hits you get.

I do find myself reading posts that have very few replies sometimes just to see if someone is indeed in need of some advice/support or just to lend an ear. I also like to reply to the pictures posts that have less replies, not because I feel sorry for them just because I think everyone deserves some feed back, people gone to the effort of putting photo's on and done various show reports and its nice for them to feel appreciated and get some comments/feed back.
smile.gif

During the daytime there's a whole tranch of people who are really not supposed to be browsing at work but do, and they can't be seen to be typing a reply on a forum, as when typing if someone peers over your shoulder you can't quickly go back to a different view of the work you're supposed to be doing.
Loads of people reply in the evenings, so, to get your clout I'd go on about 7pm or 8pm, when everyones back from work/horsey.

Couldnt have put it better, gave up asking to be honest for info i have had to re register as forgot old password, i havent just only made 20 odd posts and I hope your horse is getting better.

Nah! I have no clout either.

I think I actually made a thread a while back about how I can make a thread and it gets a few views and even fewer replies, but then X or Y could make the same thread and they would get pages of replies.

I don't usually venture in here either! *Peers round suspiciously*

Anyhoo I hope your horse is ok.

I haven't read that post, but just so you know, people can view posts without being logged in (and therefore can't respond to the posts) in the lounge (but not in soapbox where you have to be logged in).

heartily agree with this, been on this forum for around 4 years (?) could be longer...

It has always been a bit like this but in the last 9 months or so it has got to the point where I hardly ever bother posting or replying to posts as I never seem to get any replies. (unless someone doesn't agree with me in which case I get a load of vitriol). I've tried posting for 'advice' and also to generate 'discussions' but it is like pulling teeth.

I've noticed there now seems to be a division between the New Lounge and the Soapbox with people that used to post regularly in both now sticking largely to one or t'other.

The other day I posted a how much and got 1 reply. Other members post similar posts and get 15 or so. Go figure... it seems either you've got the HHO 'style' or not.

I think sadly the whole thing has become so big it's no longer the friendly place it once was.
I used to spend an hour or so answering anything I thought I might help with, but the vitriol of the replies if anyone disagreed with me decided me against it.
Plus the sheer amount of new posts that appear can't be kept up with.
I have stopped posting many links to my blog pics too, it's a bit disheartening when you get 600 views and three comments, anyone who likes looking at our foals and the comp horses reports can now just go to the blog or facebook instead.
I don't think there is such a thing as forum clout myself, if there is, I haven't got any!
I spend more time on the breeders forum started up by a few disgruntled members, it's friendly, very helpful and supportive.
I tend now to look only at comp/breeders and soapbox then log off, so perhaps many other people are like me too..
If anyone does ever pm me however, I always try to reply and offer advice, but answering on open forum these days is asking for a roasting by the so called experts. (who often need a little humility and kindness when replying, I cringe at their replies so many times...)

I think it goes both ways. These days I only pop in here when the SB is slow and I am trying not to do the work I am supposed to be doing! I used to frequent this area far more, and would give advice when people asked for it. After being told on more than one occassion that I was 'mean' (when people asked for cc on photos, advice on what to do with a dog lame horse with no chance of even being paddock sound, etc etc.) I gave up - I made the mistake of thinking these people actually wanted answers not for someone to say how pretty their pony was or how they should breed from utterly unsuitable animals. Now I post less on horsey topics, partly because of this, partly because so many posters would never take the time to thank the person or answer follow up questions, and partly because there are so many more posts than there used to be and I just don't have time to read them all.

I tend to go by the title of the post, not the poster, although there are a few folk I know in real life, and will read their posts, mainly because I know their horse, them etc rather than the quantity they post on here. Some folks make me chuckle, so I read their posts, even if I don't respond to them.

I feel the same, put a thread on for vibes for my mare and had over 50 views but only 2 people bothered to send any vibes.
A week or so back I put a thread up about a party we were having for our litter of pups who were a year old last week, only one reply to that.
I think your face has to fit on here.

I too consider myself a good thread killer poppymoo! So if we have established that none of us have clout, who on here do we think does have clout?!

TBH - it has never really occured to me
crazy.gif
. Which posts I read and reply to depend on when I log in during the day - the later I log in the fewer I read. I never reply to 'how much..' or 'CC' threads - because generally I wouldn't have a clue and it is easy to give the wrong answer and cause unintentional offence.

The traffic through the site varies hugely during the day and also the time of year - was definately busier in the winter when everyone was in because of the cold and dark.
grin.gif

I do try to reply to threads if I feel I can help.
laugh.gif

However, I'd point out (not to the OP because I don't think I saw her thread) that some OPs are badly worded.
If you want help/advice without p*ssing people off, I think you have to;
1. Make the topic clear in the title - then you attract interested viewers.
2. Make it clear what you are asking opinions on - some are worded as 'statements'.
3. Try not to make it seem as though you have already made your mind up, or people won't bother replying if their view differs.
4. If someone takes the time/trouble to reply, don't attack them for having a different point of view - maybe explain why you can't do their suggestion.
5. Thank people who reply to your thread. If I spend time answering someone, only to be ignored, I make a mental note not to bother in future.

And not having 'forum clout' or being able to blend in, are no bad things.

I'm a long serving member but very rarely post as I, like others, find that if you don't agree with the status quo there is a tendency to be flamed - which drives me nuts as I can't stand bullies.

I have noticed that the posting profile has changed a bit recently too. However, I do agree that you get the usual suspects whos posts are answered and others that are largely ignored.

Tend to agree with Shilasdair but I do probably get a big fail mark for point number 5!
