Hi guys, wondered if you had any ideas for schooling exercises I could practice on my mare to get her going a bit steadier and me not hanging onto her mouth. I have been having lessons and we have progressed a hood deal from when I first got her, but money is a bit tight atm and I cannot have on a weekly basis as before. My girl is a ish forward going but not naughty. I am used to a more laid back kick on cob and am finding it difficult not the hang on her mouth and ride more with my seat. She is ridden in a snaffle and flash. I just find her too strong and can't keep her steady on seat alone ( I am also v unfit and not strong in seat). I basically do not have brakes cantering out do I have gone back to the school as I don't want to resort to a stronger bit until I learn to hang on less! Any tips, ideas?

forget about your reins as an aid for slowing down competely use your thoughts your bum your voice and the speed that you rise !

With a gentle but consistant contact and a bend at the elbow, work on a circle do 10 forward strides rising at a normal pace for your horse and then rise slower hover out of your seat and think slow sloooow sitting back with your weight through your heels slow your rising so much so that she is almost in walk praise then gradually increase the pace ! repeat and try it working around the school

My mare was a loon when I first got her. She could accelerate so fast you got whiplash and the brakes were frankly awful! I did alot of unridden work with her, then having retrained her to stand still while I mounted (she started as she meant to go on :) )we did weeks of just walking then gradually added a tiny bit of trotting and so on. It paid off as she became entirely voice controlled eventually. I did alot of schooling in a vast open space which we visited on hacks. She learned that is she was a good girl the circles could get a bit bigger but at the first sign of silliness it was back to smaller circles again. With horses like these, you don't ever want to point them into a space in a straight line. Lots of transitions, changes of direction - keep them guessing constantly. It takes alot of time and effort but it will be worth it. Oh, and keep talking to her while you ride. It makes you breathe normally and helps to relax you, and consequently her.
