Oh how terribly sad! I'm not sure if she's your mare, but so sorry for the loss of the foal and good on the owner for putting her up as a possible foster mare.

A very brave decision! Might be worth contacting Channel 4, as they have televised racing on tomorrow afternoon and they could put your info out there, also local radio staions. It sounds like I'm wishing that a foster mare is needed, not the case at all, just that often availble mares for fostering can be missed. Good luck and I hope the mare isn't too sad.

Have you contacted Johanna Vardon at the Foaling Bank? My mare had a still born foal last year and Johanna was a tower of strength. She was able to locate a foster foal and was supportive throughout the process. My mare was put in foal to Catherston Liberator by way of thanks and she gave birth to a beautiful coloured filly this morning. Good luck finding a foal for your mare, I know exactly how you are feeling x

What a lovely story :)

Yes I have registered her with the national foaling bank and they were very helpful. She was so fantastic while she was milked to feed the foal that was unfortunately just too weak and passed. I do think she would be a fantastic foster mum. I know if it had been the other way round and I had lost my mare I would have been crying out for a foster mare and at the end of the day you never know when the situation may be the other way round. So if there is a foal in need I would be more than happy to let her help and go and raise it. I would hope that the majority of breeders would feel this way, after all everyone needs a helping in hand once in a while because unfortunately nature isn't perfect and things do go wrong.

I also want to say the National Foaling Bank are a fantastic asset to breeders in the UK. The work they do is amazing and Johanna is very experienced in foaling difficulties. They answer the phone 24hrs a day and are able to offer invaluable advise. Likewise their matchmaking services (orphaned foals, to mares who have lost a foal) and advise on how to introduce a foster mare is invaluable to any breeder with an orphaned foal.

I'm sorry to hear about your foal.

There is an advert in the broodmare section on horse quest from someone in Wales who is looking for a foster mare for their foal. I'm not sure if they have found a mare yet so it may be worth a call.

Yes I did actually speak to them but I think after being messed about by the owner of a suitable mare they opted to try and hand rear it. Its a shame they had a bad experience as unfortunately hand rearing is not ideal and I think if approached correctly, and if available, in many situations a foster mare after the initial acceptance period can be a lot less time consuming and better for the foal. After all a foal doesn't only need mom for food.

sorry to hear you lost your foal. johanna verdon will do her best to find an orpahan foal for her, but you need to prepare yourself to move your mare to new foalies home. good luck and well done for offering up yuor mare for fostering! a hard time for you and a hard time for the orphaned foal's human mum too.
