I have had a text from Sportznight asking me to ask you guys if any of you know of a Foster mare.

Last night they lost a mare and the foaly needs a Mum.

The foal is based at Newmarket in a very well known stud.

PM me and I will send you Sportznight's contact number.

Thanks for reading.

I know this is probably a really stupid question, but does the foster mare have to have lost a baby of her own? I have a mare who produces milk 24/7 for no reason (she's had a foal in the past and never dried up) - do they ever take on a foal even though they haven't had one?! Does that make sense? Am i really thick?!!!

JAGS on here has a mare who has recently lost her foal, I know she put her down on the foster mum register thing, so it may be worth PM'ing her not sure how far she is from you though.

no MM they dont have to have lost a mare to become a foster. They could have weaned their own foal or still feeding thier own foal.
The stud will normally try to mask the smell of the foal so that the mare accepts it -eg. vic in their nose, and normally in stocks (I think) till the mare accepts it.

Thank you E_C_W - i always wondered that! Pretty much like lamb adoptors in the stocks then?

So technically, my mare could be a foster mare? Had to milk her yesterday because she was soooo bagged up! Strange girl - she must be broody!!

would assume so then - never dealt with orphaned lambs.

get in touch with SN or bonzabean and see if they could use her as SN would be the person in the know
